The Ministry of Defense described the raid as part of ongoing efforts to weaken Al-Shabaab’s operational capabilities by targeting senior commanders and fighters responsible for coordinating attacks against civilians and government institutions.

Authorities said Somali forces will continue military operations aimed at dismantling Al-Shabaab networks and restoring security and stability across the country.

Lower Shabelle remains one of the key regions in Somalia’s counterinsurgency campaign due to its strategic location near Mogadishu and the continued presence of Al-Shabaab fighters in rural areas.

The region has witnessed intensified operations in recent years involving Somali government troops, local clan fighters, and international partners supporting efforts to reclaim territory from the militant group.

MUQDISHO (Kaab TV) – The Al-Shabaab militant group carried out one of the largest recent executions of people they accused of being “spies” working for the Federal Government of Somalia and foreign states.

This execution, which took place last Friday [20 February], targeted 10 men whom the group claimed had been sentenced to death by their court.

In Bu’aale district, Middle Juba region and one of the group’s strongholds, five of the men were publicly executed in an open area.

Officials from the Al-Shabaab sharia court and members of their militia were present, and local residents were called to witness the executions, which the group uses to intimidate the population in the areas they control.

Eyewitnesses said an Al-Shabaab firing squad shot the men dead, and their bloodied bodies were then displayed under the scorching sun for hours, forcing local residents to watch before the militants later returned to bury them.

The second incident involved the execution of five more men in the Kunyo-Barrow area of Lower Shabelle, also on Friday.

Residents of Kunyo-Barrow, a small agricultural town, were similarly summoned to watch the execution.

The group claimed that their court found the accused guilty of spying. All of those executed were Somali.

Al-Shabaab has previously executed people accused of assisting drone strikes against territories under their control, often targeting leaders within the group.

Sources speaking to Kaab TV reported that Al-Shabaab detains people from passenger vehicles, particularly those suspected of having links to the government or whose relatives are members of the security forces.

Al-Shabaab courts do not hold open trials, and there are no independent lawyers to defend the accused.

Independent media are also not allowed in the areas controlled by Al-Shabaab, a terrorist group affiliated with Al-Qaida.

These killings in Bu’aale and Kunyo-Barrow represent the largest number of people executed at one time by the group on accusations of spying.

The executions occurred at the start of Ramadan, a holy month observed by Muslims.

According to a statement issued by Somalia’s Ministry of Defense, the operation—conducted by Danab units—was successful.

Two Al-Shabaab members were captured, both suspected of being involved in extortion, intimidation, and abuses against civilians.

The statement added that one of the detainees, identified as Zakariye, was found during investigations to be the son of Macallin Cabdirahman, a well-known Al-Shabaab commander who is still being pursued by security forces.

Additionally, the Danab forces reported seizing a motorcycle used by Al-Shabaab for their activities, along with weapons and other materials believed to have been intended for carrying out terrorist acts against civilians.

In conclusion, the Ministry’s statement emphasized that Somali military officials will continue their sustained efforts to eliminate the Al-Shabaab group and strengthen the security and safety of the Somali people.

Lower Shabelle (KAAB TV) – Hundreds of families caught in the centre of fresh conflict in Awdheegle, west of the Somali capital Mogadishu, are stranded in camps near the town of Marka without any access to food, water, and shelter.

Around 300 families, displaced for the first time, fled their homes and farms when fighting erupted between government forces and Al-Shabaab earlier in October in Awdheegle, Lower Shabelle region.

Many walked for days with nothing but the clothes they were wearing, leaving behind houses and farmland that were later destroyed. They are living in two already existing camps seven kilometres outside Marka.

Hassan Nur Ali, 55, fled to Buulo-samow camp with his wife and seven children empty-handed. They sit during the day under a rough shelter made of tree branches tied together and covered with old cloth. Nighttime brings little sleep for them.

“We have no food, no water, and no protection from mosquitoes, we sleep under branches we gathered ourselves, without plastic sheets or bedding. Some days we go without food for two days,” Hassan told Radio Ergo’s local reporter.

Hassan’s family depends on cooked meals shared by other displaced families in the camp. The only water source is a single pipe connected to a borehole in Marka town. People wait in long queues to fetch water, and sometimes the supply stops before everyone gets a turn. Water is sold at 2,000 Somali shillings for 20 litres.

“It can take me several hours just to get two litres of water,” he said. “Some days my children go thirsty. We beg water from those who manage to fetch it.”

Hassan owned a four-hectare vegetable farm and a three-room house in Awdheegle. His crops were planted just weeks before the fighting began, but people who later returned told him his home and farm had been burned down.

“I had enough food and a proper home before, now everything is gone. Even my children’s schooling stopped. Two of them were studying in Awdheegle, now they just sit idle here,” he said.

Hassan spent two weeks walking to and from Marka town in search of casual labour, but he found that most jobs are given through personal connections, leaving him without work or income.

The 50 kilometre journey from Awdheegle to Marka took him and his family five days on foot: “We suffered from hunger and thirst the whole way, it was the hardest thing I have ever faced.”

Buulo-samow camp already housed more than 1,000 displaced families from previous conflicts. The recent influx from Awdheegle has worsened the fragile situation.

Muridi Hassan Ookar, the camp leader, said the earlier residents are sharing what little they have with the newcomers, offering cooked food and small amounts of water.

“Families here survive by helping each other, those who can afford a little rice or beans share it with those who have nothing. It’s not enough, but it saves lives for now,” the camp leader said.

A joint committee managing Buulo-samow and Awmacalin camps encourages the slightly better off families to assist the new arrivals. Most newcomers, however, lack even basic cooking utensils.

“People bring ready-cooked meals like rice, porridge, or beans with oil, sometimes they also give small jerrycans of water. That’s how they manage to survive each day,” said the camp leader.

Among the helpers is Ahado Amin Muudey, a 61-year-old widow who fled from Johara village after her eldest son was killed in the fighting. He was 31 and a father of four children, whose care now rests on Ahado’s shoulders.

“Their father died in the war. When he was alive, we never went hungry. The children went to school, and he worked hard on the farm, now there is no work and no food. We eat once or twice a day when we’re lucky,” she said.

Ahado joined Buulo-samow camp in early October. She shares the food she cooks with a neighbouring family even though her own household barely has enough to eat.

“My life depends on the kindness of neighbours, sometimes people bring us food, sometimes they don’t. Whatever I get is what I feed my children,” she added.

Ahado hopes that they can return home once peace is restored so she can cultivate her land again.

“I have a farm waiting for me, if only it was safe to go back,” she said.

Camp leaders say families in Buulo-samow and Awmalim need food, water, and shelter.

“The conditions have become much harder with the new influx. We appeal to international aid agencies to respond quickly. People are suffering from lack of water and proper housing,” said Muridi, the camp leader.

Lower Shabelle (Kaab TV) – The Somali National Army launched coordinated operations today in Janale, Lower Shabelle, to weaken Al-Shabaab’s presence in southern Somalia.

The operation was spearheaded by elite units of the Somali Armed Forces — specifically, the 144th and 145th battalions under the command of the October 14th Brigade.

The mission targeted key Al-Shabaab positions believed to be disrupting civilian life, particularly the livelihoods of farmers residing along the fertile banks of the Shabelle River.

According to military officials, the SNA’s offensives focused on the villages of Malable, Beeraha Bay, Sigaale Bari, and Doonkaa Daafedow.

All of these villages lie within the Janale jurisdiction and have reportedly been used by Al-Shabaab as strategic points for movement and harassment of local communities.

Major General Abdirahim Mohamed Munye, commander of the October 14th Brigade, personally led and oversaw the operations.

In a press briefing following the successful campaign, General Munye confirmed that the military had specifically targeted boats used by Al-Shabaab militants to navigate and cross both sides of the Shabelle River.

“These boats have been essential to Al-Shabaab’s mobility and supply chain in the region,” said General Munye. “By destroying them, we have significantly disrupted their ability to launch attacks, transport weapons, and evade security forces across the river.”

The general emphasized that the militants have been using these river routes to terrorize and extort farmers in the area, making agricultural work along the Shabelle River increasingly dangerous.

He also confirmed that the boats were located and neutralized during precision strikes carried out earlier this morning.

“This is just the beginning,” General Munye added. “We will continue our operations until these terrorists are completely removed from Lower Shabelle and all areas under threat.”

The Somali National Army, in collaboration with local authorities and international partners, has been intensifying its anti-terror operations in recent months, especially in regions where Al-Shabaab still maintains influence.

These operations are part of a broader national campaign to restore peace, security, and government control across Somalia’s southern and central regions.

Residents in the Janale area have reportedly expressed relief and support for the army’s actions, welcoming the move as a critical step toward reclaiming their communities from extremist control.

Security analysts note that control of the riverine areas in Lower Shabelle is strategically significant. Al-Shabaab’s loss of mobility in the region may mark a turning point in the ongoing effort to weaken the group’s rural strongholds.

The Somali government has reiterated its commitment to eliminating Al-Shabaab and securing sustainable peace across the country through continued military pressure, stabilization programs, and community engagement.

The joint offensive targeted militant hideouts in the villages of Shaamgare and Raqayle, both of which had been covertly occupied and used as operational bases by Al-Shabaab insurgents.

According to military sources, the extremist group had entrenched itself in the area, using natural terrain features, including caves and thick vegetation, to conceal their presence and evade detection.

The operation commenced at dawn and was executed with precision and coordination between ground troops and supporting units. Following a brief but intense firefight, government forces overwhelmed the insurgents, effectively dislodging them from their positions.

Military commanders on the ground confirmed that significant losses were inflicted on Al-Shabaab fighters during the clashes. Many of the insurgents were either neutralized or forced to flee, abandoning weapons and supplies as they retreated.

The Somali Army also reported that a number of militants were flushed out from concealed locations, including underground hideouts and cave systems.

Remarkably, the operation was conducted without any casualties among the Somali National Army or AUSSOM peacekeepers, a testament to the strategic planning and effective execution of the mission.

Colonel Ahmed Yusuf, one of the commanding officers in charge of the operation, spoke to KAAB TV following the victory:

“Today’s success in Shaamgare and Raqayle is a continuation of our commitment to uproot Al-Shabaab from all parts of Somalia. Our soldiers demonstrated bravery and discipline, and we are proud to see these areas returned to government control.”

Local sources also expressed relief and support for the military presence, noting that the liberation of these villages restores a sense of safety for civilians who had been living under fear and intimidation by the militants.

This operation marks another step forward in the ongoing national campaign to eradicate Al-Shabaab from southern Somalia and restore peace and stability in regions long affected by insurgent activities.

Authorities confirmed that stabilization teams would soon be deployed to assess local needs and assist in restoring basic services and governance structures in the newly liberated villages.

As military operations continue across the region, Somali and African Union officials reaffirmed their joint commitment to defeating terrorism and supporting Somalia’s path toward long-term peace and reconstruction.

Lower Shabelle (KAAB TV) – A senior commander of the Al-Shabaab militant group has been killed by the Ugandan People’s Defence Forces, which operates under the African Union Support Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), according to an official statement released by the Ugandan military.

The deceased, identified as Osman Hussein Buune, was reportedly the head of Al-Shabaab operations in the Lower Shabelle region. He was killed during a surprise military operation carried out by Ugandan troops near the town of Bulo Mareer on Sunday, September 14.

Brigadier General Joseph Musoke Ssemwanga, Commander of UPDF’s First Sector, confirmed the successful operation in a brief statement. He noted that several items were recovered at the scene, including a pistol, a small bag, a drum, two mobile phones, and various other materials believed to be of intelligence value.

“This operation is a significant blow to the leadership of Al-Shabaab in the region,” said Brig. Gen. Ssemwanga. “It sends a clear message that AUSSOM, alongside the UPDF and our international allies, remains fully committed to dismantling terrorist networks and restoring long-term peace and stability to Somalia.”

This latest operation follows a similar military success last month when Ugandan forces, in coordination with the Somali National Army (SNA), launched a large-scale assault in Barire, also in Lower Shabelle. That offensive reportedly resulted in the deaths of over 50 Al-Shabaab fighters, including several high-ranking officers.

The UPDF, as part of AUSSOM’s ongoing stabilization mission, continues to work closely with Somali forces to weaken Al-Shabaab’s presence and influence across southern Somalia—a region that has long served as a strategic stronghold for the militant group.

Military analysts say these operations are critical in degrading Al-Shabaab’s operational capabilities and disrupting its leadership structure. Despite persistent security challenges, both Ugandan and Somali forces remain resolute in their efforts to secure liberated territories and protect civilian populations from insurgent violence.

Lower Shabelle (KAAB TV) – The Somali National Army (SNA), led by the elite October 14 Brigade, has launched a series of coordinated military operations targeting Al-Shabaab strongholds in the Lower Shabelle region. These offensives are part of a broader government campaign to eliminate the presence of the militant group in southern Somalia.

The recent operations specifically targeted the villages of Malable, Sigaale, and Buulo Arundi, all of which fall within the Janale district — an area that has long been considered a strategic base for Al-Shabaab militants.

Lieutenant General Abdirahim Mohamed Munye, commander of the October 14 Brigade, personally oversaw the operations. Speaking to national media, he confirmed that government troops encountered fierce resistance from Al-Shabaab fighters, who had deployed armed militias in an attempt to thwart the army’s advance and to intimidate local farmers residing in the targeted villages.

“These terrorists were preparing to displace innocent farmers from their land, but our forces intervened swiftly to stop them,” said Lt. Gen. Munye. “Our mission is clear — we will not rest until every corner of Lower Shabelle is free from the grip of Al-Shabaab.”

He further emphasized that these military efforts will continue intensively until the entire region is secured and Al-Shabaab’s operational capacity is dismantled.

Lower Shabelle has long been a hotspot for Al-Shabaab activity, with the group exploiting the region’s rural terrain to launch attacks and maintain its logistical networks. The Somali National Army, with support from regional and international partners, has been conducting sustained operations in the region for several years. Despite some progress, challenges remain due to the group’s entrenched presence and use of guerrilla tactics.

The government’s latest actions reflect a renewed determination to restore peace and stability in the region, with military operations increasingly focusing on both disrupting militant activities and safeguarding civilian populations.

Mogadishu (KAAB TV) — The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), in coordination with Somali national forces, has launched a new wave of military operations targeting the Al-Shabaab militant group in the Lower Shabelle region.

This joint campaign marks a significant escalation in efforts to dismantle the extremist group’s strongholds in southern Somalia.

According to a press release from ATMIS, the latest offensive was initiated following a fierce battle last Friday in the towns of Sabib and Aanoole.

The operation, conducted in partnership with the Somali National Army (SNA), reportedly resulted in the death of numerous Al-Shabaab fighters and the seizure of weapons and equipment.

“We are fully engaged in sustained security operations in the Sabib and Aanoole areas to neutralize the ongoing threat posed by Al-Shabaab,” the statement read. “Our forces successfully repelled an attack by the group and remain in full control of the battlefield.”

ATMIS further announced that it is planning additional large-scale offensives aimed at expelling Al-Shabaab from all territories it currently controls in Lower Shabelle. The mission emphasized its continued commitment to stabilizing the region and supporting Somali-led security initiatives.

In a separate statement, the Federal Government of Somalia confirmed the success of its security forces in repelling the Al-Shabaab assault. Government officials noted that counterterrorism operations are ongoing and that efforts to restore peace and security in the region are being intensified.

Due to the remoteness of the combat zones and restricted media access, independent verification of casualties remains difficult.

However, this operation signals a renewed and determined push by both ATMIS and Somali authorities to weaken Al-Shabaab’s grip on southern Somalia, particularly in regions where the group has maintained a significant presence.

The Lower Shabelle region has long been a strategic and contested area, and this latest development suggests that both national and international partners are stepping up their resolve to reclaim control and restore lasting peace.

Lower Shabelle, Somalia (KAAB TV) — Intense fighting has broken out in the Sabeed and Aanoole areas of Lower Shabelle, according to local sources and media reports. The battle, which began in the early hours of the morning, is said to involve Somali government forces, supported by Ugandan troops participating in the African Union’s AUSOM operation, clashing with the militant group Al-Shabaab.

Eyewitnesses report that the conflict was triggered by a surprise attack launched by Al-Shabaab, targeting positions held by the allied forces in the region. The attack reportedly began with a series of powerful explosions that were heard several kilometers away, reverberating across the surrounding countryside.

Following the initial assault, fierce fighting ensued between the two sides. Civilians in the vicinity of Sabeed and Aanoole describe the ongoing battle as one of the most intense in recent months. Local media report that the fighting has continued for over three hours, with both sides engaged in close combat.

Preliminary, unconfirmed reports suggest significant casualties, including both deaths and injuries among the combatants. However, due to the volatility of the situation and the lack of access to the frontlines, official figures regarding the number of casualties remain unavailable at this time.

So far, there has been no official statement from the Federal Government of Somalia or the Lower Shabelle regional administration regarding the clashes. The lack of communication has heightened concerns among residents and observers alike, as the security situation in the region remains highly unstable.

It is worth noting that the Sabeed and Aanoole areas were only recently reclaimed from Al-Shabaab. On June 21, Somali government forces, in coordination with AUSOM, successfully liberated the region after an extended period of militant control. Today’s assault appears to be part of Al-Shabaab’s ongoing efforts to regain lost ground and disrupt government operations in southern Somalia.

Residents in the surrounding villages are calling for urgent humanitarian support and heightened security as the conflict shows no signs of abating. Further updates are expected as more information becomes available.
