Beledweyne (KAAB TV) – Local defense forces killed a senior Al-Shabab commander and several of his bodyguards in an ambush on Saturday near Mahaday town in Somalia’s Middle Shabelle region, officials confirmed.

The operation was carried out in the villages of Ciid Ciidka and Jeembilow, about 20 kilometers north of Mahaday, where Al-Shabab militants had been active.

According to local officials, the slain commander, identified as Muhudin Hassan, oversaw the group’s operations in several rural communities and was responsible for enforcing extortion and intimidation campaigns that targeted residents and traders in the area.

Community fighters said they killed Muhudiin and his armed guards in the surprise attack and seized two AK-47 rifles and military equipment from the scene. The raid, they added, was part of a growing campaign by local militias, known as Ma’awisley, to drive Al-Shabab out of villages across the region.

The latest operation in Middle Shabelle follows a series of targeted strikes against Al-Shabab commanders across southern Somalia. Last week, a founding member of the militant group was killed in a drone strike in Middle Shabelle, part of coordinated counterterrorism operations involving Somali forces and international partners.

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who visited the Middle Shabelle frontlines in March 2025, described the region as “strategically vital” to stabilizing central Somalia, noting its position along the main supply corridor between Mogadishu and Beledweyne.

“If we secure this corridor, we secure the heartbeat of the country,” he said during the visit.

Regional security officials praised Saturday’s operation as part of this ongoing effort, saying it reflects growing cooperation between federal and community forces.

“These local operations are making a difference,” one officer told HOL by phone. “They know the terrain and the people, and they are helping us close in on Al-Shabab hideouts.”

The militant group has not yet commented on the reported deaths.

Al-Shabab has previously retaliated against similar attacks, targeting villages that support the government or provide intelligence to the army.

Federal and community forces say they will continue to pursue the group’s remaining cells in Middle Shabelle, a region viewed as a critical front in Somalia’s wider campaign to dismantle Al-Shabab’s network across central and southern Somalia.

Beledweyne (KAAB TV) – A powerful explosion rocked Bundoweyn in Beledweyne early this morning, causing widespread panic among residents.

The blast, which was widely heard across the city, struck a local restaurant in the Isbartiibo area of Bundoweyn.

The restaurant is known to be frequented by government troops and members of the local Mawiisley militia, although no military personnel were reported to be present at the time of the explosion.

Preliminary reports from local sources confirm that three civilians lost their lives in the incident, including one woman.

Four other civilians were injured, some of them seriously. The victims are believed to have been customers or staff at the restaurant during the time of the explosion.

The exact cause and nature of the blast remain unclear. Authorities have yet to release an official statement detailing whether it was a suicide bombing, a planted device, or another type of attack.

There are strong suspicions that the explosion was a premeditated act, deliberately timed to avoid harming military personnel and instead target civilians.

While no group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, Al-Shabaab, the militant Islamist group affiliated with al-Qaeda, has a well-documented history of carrying out similar attacks in Beledweyne and other towns in the Hiiran region.

The group often targets areas where government forces or local militias are known to gather, although it frequently results in civilian casualties.

As of now, the local security forces in Beledweyne have not issued any official response or update concerning the explosion, the victims, or the investigation into the incident.

The lack of immediate communication has raised concerns among residents, who are demanding accountability and greater security in public areas.

Beledweyne, a strategic town near the Ethiopian border, has seen a surge in violence in recent months, as Somali government forces, supported by local militias, continue to wage operations against Al-Shabaab in the region.

The group still maintains a deadly presence, often resorting to asymmetric tactics like improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and targeted bombings.

This latest explosion highlights the fragile security situation in the region and underscores the urgent need for improved intelligence and protective measures to safeguard civilians.

BELEDWEYNE (KAAB TV) – The Minister of Internal Affairs of the Hirshabelle regional administration, Abdi Dahir Gure Karore, has issued a scathing critique of the Somali Federal Government, accusing it of neglecting the local Mawisley militia – a volunteer force that has played a pivotal role in fighting the Al-Shabaab insurgency in the Hiran region for several years.

In a strongly worded statement to the media, Minister Karore condemned what he described as the federal government’s “deliberate negligence” towards the very communities that have made the greatest sacrifices in the war against Al-Shabaab. He asserted that the central government in Mogadishu has consistently failed to provide the necessary support, both logistical and financial, to the Mawisley fighters and the people of Hiran, who have borne the brunt of the fighting.

“The government has never given Mawisley the support they rightfully deserved,” Karore said. “Federal forces operating in Hiran heavily relied on these local fighters. And when the militias became weakened, the government troops collapsed right alongside them.”

The Minister further emphasized the resilience and self-reliance of the Hiran population, stating that the region’s inhabitants have repeatedly demonstrated their commitment to freeing their land from extremist control without waiting for help that never arrives.

“The people of Hiran are not beggars. They have fought valiantly, shed blood, and made every sacrifice to push Al-Shabaab out of their towns and villages. They deserve not only recognition but real, tangible support,” he added.

Karore’s comments come at a time of increasing concern in the region, as reports emerge that Al-Shabaab has recently regained control of several key areas in Hiran. According to local sources, the extremist group has taken advantage of the weakening of Mawisley forces, along with the apparent drawdown of federal military units in the area following recent setbacks.

The Hirshabelle minister voiced alarm over the deteriorating security conditions and the repeated failures of military offensives that, he says, were mostly led by under-resourced local militias. He warned that without a substantial change in policy and a serious commitment from the federal government, the progress made in recent years could be entirely reversed.

“It is unacceptable that the same people who risk their lives daily to defend Somalia from terrorism are left to fight alone. These militias have done more with less, and they are now stretched to the limit. Ignoring their needs is not just a failure of leadership – it’s a betrayal,” Karore stated.

While the Somali Federal Government has not yet issued a public response to these allegations, several insiders familiar with the situation have confirmed that the lack of support from both federal and regional security institutions remains a significant obstacle in the ongoing fight against Al-Shabaab, a group that continues to be linked to the global terrorist network Al-Qaeda.

As Al-Shabaab regains ground in central Somalia, the frustrations voiced by local leaders like Minister Karore highlight a growing rift between the federal government and regional administrations. The consequences of continued inaction, many warn, could further destabilize a region already teetering on the edge.

A document circulating on social media claimed that the Mayor of Bundaweyn District, known as “October,” had been removed from office. However, Beledweyne District officials have strongly denied the authenticity of this letter.

In an official statement released by Beledweyne District Governor Omar Osman Alasow, he categorically rejected the validity of the letter, labeling it as fake and without any legal merit. He emphasized that the letter has not been issued through any legitimate administrative channel and should not be regarded as official.

Governor Alasow clarified that, according to the governance structure under the Hirshabelle State regional administration, the authority to appoint or dismiss members of the Neighborhood Committee—including district mayors—rests solely with the District Governor. Any change in leadership must follow formal legal and administrative procedures.

“The letter circulating online is not recognized by the district administration. It has no foundation in law or procedure,” said Governor Alasow. “We urge the public and all institutions operating in Beledweyne District to disregard it entirely.”

The District Governor further reaffirmed that Mrs. Xuusstin Xansininininin remains the duly appointed and serving Mayor of Bundaweyn District.

The Beledweyne administration has called on the community and all relevant organizations to remain vigilant against misinformation and to rely only on verified communications from official sources.

Beledweyne (KAAB TV) – A major military campaign known as the Shabelle Offensive continues to unfold across the southern Shabelle Valley, as government forces intensify operations aimed at dislodging entrenched insurgent groups that have maintained control over key territories for years.

Launched in early June, the offensive marks one of the most ambitious attempts in recent years to reassert state authority over rural districts long plagued by instability, tribal conflict, and insurgent rule. The Ministry of Defense confirmed on Tuesday that joint ground and air operations have made “significant progress,” reclaiming more than 20 villages along the Lower Shabelle corridor.

“Morale is high, and momentum is on our side,” said Brigadier General Adan Mahat, who is leading the offensive. “We are committed to restoring security and dignity to communities who have suffered under criminal and extremist control.”

The Shabelle Valley, named after the life-giving river that runs through it, has long been a strategic and symbolic region. Rich in farmland and natural resources, it has also served as a key smuggling and insurgent supply route. The current operation is reportedly backed by international allies offering intelligence and logistical support, though officials declined to disclose which foreign nations were involved.

Civilians Caught in the Crossfire

Despite the military’s optimism, humanitarian organizations have expressed growing concern about the safety of civilians. Over 15,000 people have been displaced since the offensive began, according to the Shabelle Human Rights Monitor.

“Entire families are fleeing their homes, leaving behind everything,” said Najma Warsame, a field coordinator with Relief Now. “Some areas are too dangerous for aid workers to access, and we fear a worsening humanitarian situation if corridors aren’t opened soon.”

The government insists it is working to coordinate relief efforts, pledging that stabilization teams will follow closely behind military units to provide emergency aid and restore services.

Insurgent Resistance

While officials claim to have disrupted insurgent supply chains and communications, resistance has been fierce in certain strongholds. In particular, the town of Dhoobley witnessed intense clashes over the weekend, resulting in casualties on both sides. Independent verification remains difficult, as mobile networks and press access are restricted in active combat zones.

Analysts warn that a military victory alone will not secure lasting peace in the region.

“Unless the government follows this offensive with inclusive governance and development, any gains could be temporary,” said Dr. Hani Yusuf, a regional security expert. “These areas need more than just soldiers—they need justice, opportunity, and trust in the state.”

What’s Next?

Government sources suggest the offensive will continue into the coming weeks, with plans to move further west toward contested river towns where insurgent leadership is believed to be concentrated.

President Ibrahim Khalif has publicly praised the operation, calling it “a turning point in our nation’s struggle for unity and security.” Whether the Shabelle Offensive can achieve that goal remains to be seen—but for now, the battle rages on.

BELEDWEYNE (KAAB TV) – Somali government forces, in coordination with local allied militias known as the Mawisley, have reported killing more than 20 Al-Shabaab fighters in a fierce battle early this morning in the Mabah and Gayaaad areas of the Hiran region.

According to an official government statement, the clash resulted in the deaths of at least six insurgents on the spot, with several others sustaining serious injuries. The offensive, part of a wider counter-terrorism campaign, marks another significant development in the ongoing efforts to eliminate Al-Shabaab presence in central Somalia.

Military sources confirmed that the joint forces launched a pre-dawn assault on known Al-Shabaab positions, following intelligence reports that the militants were regrouping in the area. Heavy gunfire was exchanged during the confrontation, and the area has since been secured by government troops.

The Somali National Army (SNA), backed by the local Mawisley militia, has intensified its operations in recent weeks. Officials attribute their recent successes to improved coordination, ground intelligence, and support from international partners who are providing aerial surveillance, targeted airstrikes, and logistical aid.

“These operations will not cease until Al-Shabaab is completely eradicated from the Hiran region,” a senior security official stated. “Our goal is to restore full security and stability for the residents of the area and prevent the group from regaining any foothold.”

Residents have welcomed the ongoing operations, though concerns remain about potential retaliatory attacks. Authorities have urged civilians to cooperate with security forces and report suspicious activities to ensure long-term peace.

The offensive in Hiran is part of a broader national campaign to dismantle Al-Shabaab’s operational capabilities across Somalia. With continued military pressure and community cooperation, officials believe lasting security gains can be achieved.

MOGADISHU (KAAB TV) – Last Wednesday, Somalia’s National Consultative Council (NCC)—excluding Puntland and Jubbaland—announced its recognition of SSC-Khaatumo as a Federal Member State.

According to the NCC communiqué, SSC-Khaatumo will officially join the federal system after a local clan conference is completed within the next two months.

This came after SSC-Khaatumo leader Abdiqadir Aw-Ali Firdhiye participated in his first National Consultative Council (NCC) meeting held from May 5 to 7.

However, the move has triggered a political Pandora’s box, adding fresh complications to Somalia’s already fragile and poorly defined federal structure.

The core problem lies in Somalia’s Provisional Constitution, which leaves the formation of Federal Member States (FMS) open to interpretation. Article 49(6) states: “Based on a voluntary decision, two or more regions may merge to form a Federal Member State.”

This provision makes clear that no single region can become a federal state on its own.

Meanwhile, Article 142(1) recognizes existing Federal Member States that were established before the constitution’s adoption, allowing them to maintain their powers temporarily until all FMS are properly formed and harmonized with the national constitution.

Yet, in practice, the formation of federal states has been inconsistent, often determined by clan-based arrangements rather than geographic or legal criteria.

For example, Galmudug was formed by merging Galgaduud with only part of Mudug—leaving the rest of Mudug within Puntland.

Though controversial, the Federal Government framed Galmudug’s creation as a political solution rather than a strictly legal one.

The Case of SSC-Khaatumo

The recognition of SSC-Khaatumo followed a deadly conflict in Las Anod in August 2023, where Dhulbahante militias fought Somaliland forces.

Las Anod was subsequently declared the capital of SSC-Khaatumo, an entity claiming to represent the Sool, Sanaag, and Cayn regions.

In reality, however, Sanaag has not joined the project, and “Cayn” refers only to Buuhoodle, a town that formerly fell under Togdheer region.

This means SSC-Khaatumo effectively governs only parts of Sool—falling short of the constitutional requirement that two or more regions must voluntarily merge to form a federal state.

Domino Effect in the Regions

SSC-Khaatumo’s recognition has sparked similar demands across the country.

On Saturday, Beledweyne—Hiiraan’s capital—was seized by former warlord Abdifatah Hassan Ali and his clan militia.

<img decoding="async" class="wp-image-12218 size-full" title="Armed men were seen in Beledweyne, Hiiraan, on Friday.
They claim to be establishing “Hiiraan State,” an initiative previously proposed but never recognized.

The Hirshabelle State, which governs Hiiraan, has not responded. Locals now fear violent clashes if Hirshabelle attempts to retake control.

Elders and exiled politicians from the Somaliland’s Awdal region, which borders Djibouti, have long advocated for federal member state status under Somalia.

Unable to safely campaign within Somaliland, they’ve been meeting in Mogadishu.

Tensions have also flared in Gedo, Jubbland, where community leaders have long rejected the leadership of Jubbaland President Ahmed Madobe.

The NCC’s recent remarks about forming a “legal” Jubbaland have emboldened calls from Gedo clans to seek separation.

Residents of Banadir, which includes Mogadishu, continue to push for their own federal status. However, the federal government has been reluctant to allow this, fearing the loss of revenue generated by Mogadishu’s seaport and airport.

SSC-Khaatumo was recognized after a deadly 2023 conflict in Las Anod, where Dhulbahante forces expelled Somaliland forces and declared the city their capital.

Ripple Effects on Existing States

Analysts warn that the SSC-Khaatumo decision may destabilize other federal states.

In Southwest State, some clans in Lower Shabelle have begun advocating for separation.

In Galmudug, residents of Elbur are discussing breaking away from the current state structure.

These growing fissures reflect the absence of a uniform, legally binding process for federalization—leaving room for political opportunism and rising clan-based fragmentation.

Beledweyne (KAAB TV) – A new contingent of troops from Djibouti has arrived in Beledweyne to join the African Union Stabilization and Support Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), the successor mission to ATMIS (African Union Transition Mission in Somalia). This marks a critical phase in the AU’s continued support for Somalia’s security transition.

The newly arrived troops were welcomed by Colonel Ugas Khalif Airport, commander of AUSSOM’s 4th Division, alongside senior officers from the Somali National Army, including Saeed Waberi. Shortly after their arrival, the reinforcements were deployed to Bula Burde and Jalalaqsi—two strategic towns in the Hiran region that have recently experienced renewed attacks by the terrorist group Al-Shabaab.

Officials confirmed that the Djiboutian forces will support joint operations with Somali National Army (XDS) units, focusing on stabilizing central Somalia. Their mission includes securing administrative hubs, protecting vital infrastructure like airstrips, and safeguarding key supply routes essential for AUSSOM logistics.

This deployment aligns with Djibouti’s reaffirmation of its long-standing commitment to Somalia’s security. President Ismail Omar Guelleh recently reiterated his government’s dedication to AUSSOM, which officially replaced ATMIS in January 2024 following a United Nations Security Council resolution.

Djibouti has played a pivotal role in operations within Sector 4 and is expected to remain a crucial security partner as Somalia intensifies its military campaign against Al-Shabaab, an Al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorist organization.

Beledweyne (KAAB TV) – The envoy of the president of the Federal Republic of Somalia in charge of local military affairs, Ali Jeyte Isman, has reported on the latest operations to liberate Al Shabaab from areas west of Hiraan in Hiraan region.

Ali Jeyte said that the forces of the country, peacekeeping forces, Hiil Walal forces and the people’s forces cooperated with the Al-Shabaab group hiding in the mountains of Hiran region, where they were heavily defeated.

He underlined that in the last operations they killed foreigners belonging to the Al Shabaab group, who invaded to kill the Somali people.

“I want to share with the people of Somalia that the wars that have taken place have killed foreigners who are Somalis in the mountains and we cannot live with my bones. It is impossible for me to live there because it is a foreigner who is going with him. “An unknown person died on that mountain yesterday. Many princes were destroyed there. Some of them who are not from their locality died there, and the rest will be removed by the will of Allah.”

He called on the Somali people to support the country’s armed forces and public forces in their efforts to eliminate the Al Shabaab group. He said that the country and the Somali people are facing many problems.
