Mogadishu (Kaab TV) – Somalia and China on Tuesday commemorated the 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, reaffirming their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation and advancing shared interests.
Speaking at a ceremony held in Mogadishu, Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre described the anniversary as a historic milestone that reflects the enduring friendship between the two nations.
“We have gathered to celebrate 65 years of diplomatic relations between Somalia and China—an important anniversary that testifies to the lasting friendship between our two peoples, built on mutual respect for sovereignty and shared understanding,” Abdi said.
He noted that since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1960, Somalia and China have worked together through periods of progress and challenge, navigating regional and global transformations while maintaining close cooperation.
Over the decades, Abdi added, China has remained a reliable partner to Somalia, consistently respecting its independence, supporting national development priorities, and demonstrating confidence in the country’s future.
“Our cooperation has been practical and impactful. It has supported infrastructure development, strengthened health and education systems, enhanced public services and capacity building, and responded to humanitarian needs during difficult times,” he said.
Chinese Ambassador to Somalia Wang Yu said the establishment of diplomatic relations on Dec. 14, 1960, marked the beginning of a new chapter in friendly exchanges between the two countries.
“That year, Somalia gained independence, and China was among the first countries to recognize it. At the same time, Somalia became the first country in East Africa to establish diplomatic relations with China,” Wang said.
He expressed China’s appreciation for Somalia’s continued adherence to the one-China principle and reiterated Beijing’s firm support for Somalia’s efforts to safeguard its sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.
The ambassador added that the China–Somalia relationship stands as an example of mutually beneficial cooperation and shared development.
