Mogadishu (KAAB TV) – The Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) has delivered a new consignment of humanitarian aid to families displaced by recent clashes in the Lower Shabelle region.
The shipment, consisting of 3,000 bags of assorted food supplies, was sent to residents in Awdhegle, Sabid, Anole, and Barire — areas that have recently been the scene of renewed conflict and military operations.
In a video statement released Friday, SoDMA confirmed that the food aid was transported from its central warehouse in Mogadishu using five trucks, each carrying 600 bags of essential food commodities.
The agency stated that the consignment is part of an ongoing emergency response initiative to assist vulnerable communities affected by displacement and food insecurity in newly recovered territories.
“We want to make sure this food reaches the intended beneficiaries directly, household by household,” said Sahra Ali Yusuf, the Director of SoDMA’s Relief Department. “Our priority is to ensure that families who have been forced to flee their homes due to the recent fighting receive immediate relief assistance.”
Although the agency did not specify the exact composition of the food packages, similar distributions by SoDMA typically include rice, flour, sugar, cooking oil, and dates — staples aimed at providing short-term nutritional support for affected households.
The consignment was officially handed over at SoDMA’s central warehouse in Mogadishu to Si’id Ade’d, the Regional Coordinator for the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management in South West State.
He received the supplies on behalf of the regional administration and confirmed that delivery to the target towns would commence immediately.
“We are here today overseeing the dispatch of 3,000 food bags loaded on five trucks. These supplies are destined for the towns of Awdhegle, Sabid, Anole, and Barire — all of which were recently liberated areas in Lower Shabelle,” Si’id said.
“This assistance comes at a critical time as residents in these communities continue to face severe humanitarian challenges following months of insecurity.” he added.
According to SoDMA, the distribution is part of a broader government-led effort to stabilize regions recently retaken from Al-Shabaab by the Somali National Army (SNA) with support from the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).
The coordinated military operations in Lower Shabelle have enabled humanitarian agencies to regain access to areas previously cut off by insecurity.
Awdhegle, one of the key agricultural towns in the region, was the latest to be secured by Somali forces on October 5, 2025, following a series of offensives aimed at restoring government control across South West State.
SoDMA reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with federal and regional authorities, humanitarian partners, and community leaders to ensure aid reaches those most in need.
The agency also noted that assessments are ongoing to determine additional support requirements for displaced families, including access to clean water, shelter, and healthcare.
The Lower Shabelle region remains one of Somalia’s most volatile and food-insecure areas due to prolonged conflict, flooding, and limited access to humanitarian services.
The latest intervention by SoDMA is part of a broader national effort to strengthen emergency response capacity and improve resilience among communities emerging from conflict.
