President Said Abdullahi Deni arrived in Galdogob, Mudug on Wednesday after spending several days in Galkayo, as part of a regional visit focused on security, local grievances and relations with community leaders.
Galdogob lies near the border between Puntland and Ethiopia’s Somali Regional State.
During his visit, President Deni met with Ugaas Abdirahman Ugaas Mohamed and is expected to hold further meetings with traditional elders, local officials and members of the community.
The meetings are expected to focus on the overall situation in Galdogob, security concerns, local development needs and grievances raised by sections of the community over political representation and the distribution of government positions and resources within Puntland.
The visit also comes amid recent developments involving clan-based forces in the area.
Ugaas Abdirahman Ugaas Mohamed recently played a role in bringing troops from the district who had been aligned with the Federal Government of Somalia under the authority of the Puntland administration.
The move has reportedly increased pressure on the traditional leader to address longstanding complaints from his community regarding political representation and power-sharing within Puntland.
His meeting with President Deni is therefore expected to provide an opportunity to discuss those concerns directly with the Puntland leadership.
Deni’s visit also follows heightened political and security tensions in parts of Puntland, particularly in Mudug and Bari regions, where disagreements over the control and allegiance of local forces have increasingly become linked to the broader political dispute between Puntland and the Federal Government.
The president’s engagement with traditional leaders in Galdogob could therefore be important in preventing local grievances from developing into wider political or security tensions.
The role of clan elders is particularly significant in mediating disputes and maintaining stability in communities where traditional authorities continue to have considerable influence.
