Puntland Civil Society Denies Role in Somalia Constitution Talks

|

GAROWE (Kaab TV) – The Puntland Non-State Actors Association (PUNSAA) has clarified to the Somali public that it will never be part of any amendments to the Provisional Constitution, whether those provisions have already been altered or are still pending.

In a press release, PUNSAA also stated that it is reminding the Federal Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs of Somalia, which today issued a statement claiming that Puntland civil society participated in the constitutional amendment process, that the position of Puntland civil society remains exactly as declared on March 30, 2024.

PUNSAA reiterated that it clearly articulated its stance on the proposed amendments to the Provisional Constitution in its statement issued on March 30, 2024.

“Furthermore, the Puntland Non-State Actors Association (PUNSAA) confirms that the Independent Constitutional Review and Implementation Commission neither consulted nor listened to the views of Puntland civil society regarding the constitutional amendments, despite stating in its published document that it had consulted civil society,” the press release said.

This clarification comes after the Somali Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Hassan Sheikh Ali, claimed yesterday that “various stakeholders, including Puntland, were consulted,” without providing any evidence to support this assertion.
