Mogadishu (KAAB TV) – The Banadir Regional Police Command has confirmed the arrest of 17 individuals, including both civilians and military personnel, in connection with unauthorized gunfire during Somalia’s Independence Day celebrations on the night of June 26.
The joint operation was carried out by the Banadir Police Force in coordination with other national security agencies based in the capital.
Authorities stated that these individuals are accused of violating a public order that strictly prohibited celebratory gunfire as part of efforts to maintain peace and ensure the safety of residents during the national festivities. Despite the official directive, the suspects reportedly discharged firearms in various parts of the city, causing alarm and risking civilian safety.
The Banadir Police Command emphasized that a thorough investigation is currently underway to assess the full extent of the damage or disruption caused by the illegal gunfire. Preliminary reports suggest that some of the shots may have originated from military camps, prompting security forces to expand their search for additional suspects who are believed to have participated in the unauthorized activity.
Law enforcement authorities reiterated their commitment to upholding public order and holding accountable anyone who threatens the safety and security of Mogadishu residents. The police are actively pursuing others linked to the incident and have warned that further arrests may follow.
In a statement, the Banadir Regional Police Command urged the public to remain vigilant and cooperative by reporting any suspicious activities or individuals suspected of undermining public safety. Citizens are encouraged to contact the Somali Police Force’s Emergency Hotline by dialing 991.
This latest enforcement effort highlights the government’s broader initiative to strengthen security protocols and curb the reckless use of firearms, particularly during national events.
