Mogadishu (KAAB TV) – The United Nations has announced that it will be forced to revise its humanitarian aid plans for Somalia and Yemen this year due to a significant decline in international funding, even though the needs in both countries remain critically high.
Speaking at a press conference in New York, Stephanie Tremblay from the UN spokesperson’s office stated that the organization has conducted a comprehensive review of its humanitarian operations over the past two months.
She explained that unprecedented cuts in global humanitarian funding are compelling the UN and its partners to drastically scale back life-saving programs that millions rely on.
Tremblay emphasized the importance of strategically allocating available resources to ensure that the most vulnerable populations in Somalia and Yemen continue to receive essential assistance.
“All the needs and planned responses outlined in the 2025 humanitarian strategy are accurate and urgent,” she said. “If additional funding becomes available, we are prepared to scale up our operations to reach all those originally targeted for aid.”
She issued a stark warning about the potential consequences of inaction: “The outcomes will be devastating if we fall short. Millions could face hunger, a lack of clean water, and limited access to basic services.”
Tremblay also cautioned that mortality and illness rates are likely to rise as health facilities shut down and disease outbreaks increase, compounding the already dire situation in both countries.
