NEW YORK (KAAB TV) – The United Nations Security Council has decided to extend the enforcement of Somalia’s arms and coal embargo by renewing the maritime ban on illegal arms imports and coal exports. This decision underscores the Council’s determination to prevent Al-Shabaab from destabilizing the region, with their actions— including acts of terrorism— posing a direct threat to international peace and security.
In a unanimous vote, the 15-member Security Council adopted resolution 2775 (2025) (to be issued as document S/RES/2775(2025)), acting under Chapter VII of the UN Charter. The resolution extends the provisions of Chapters 15 and 17 of resolution 2182 (2014) and updates Chapter 1 of resolution 2762 (2024), effective until March 3, 2025.
The resolution authorizes member states to inspect vessels in the Somali Sea and surrounding areas, including the Arabian Sea and Persian Gulf, if there are reasonable grounds to suspect they are transporting weapons, military equipment, or coal, all of which are subject to the embargo.
Furthermore, member states are authorized to confiscate and dispose of any prohibited items identified during inspections. The coal seized may be resold, under the protection of the Somalia-Eritrea Monitoring Group.
