UK Pledges Additional $3.9 Million to Support Somalia’s Security Transition

|

Mogadishu (KAAB TV) – The United Kingdom has announced an additional $3.9 million in funding to support Somalia’s ongoing security transition, bringing its total contribution to more than $50 million since 2021, according to a statement issued Monday by the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS).

The new funds will be directed to the Somali Security Forces Trust Fund (SSF), managed by the United Nations, which currently provides logistical support to 18,900 personnel from the Somali National Army and the Somali Police Force.

In 2024 alone, UK support has enabled UNSOS to deliver 6,000 tonnes of food and 2,000 tonnes of fuel to Somali security forces. The funding has also supported the emergency evacuation of hundreds of wounded soldiers from active conflict zones.

“The UK is a strong friend of Somalia. At this critical moment, I am pleased to announce additional funding to support the fight against violent extremist groups,” said British Ambassador to Somalia Mike Nithavrianakis. “I encourage other partners to contribute to the UNSOS SSF Trust Fund to support the brave Somali Security Forces and help ensure a safe and secure future for all Somalis and the region.”

UNSOS has warned that it needs at least $2 million per month to meet the growing logistical demands of Somali forces. A planned increase in personnel to 20,900—mandated under UN Security Council Resolution 2767 (2024)—has further underscored the need for sustained and predictable funding.

Somalia’s National Security Adviser, Hussein Sheikh Ali, welcomed the UK’s continued support and reiterated the government’s call for increased international assistance.

“The logistical support provided by UNSOS has been vital, especially in counter-terrorism and health operations,” said Ali. “We urge our international partners to increase their contributions in 2025, as the Federal Government continues to build and expand its security forces. Somalia remains committed to transparency, accountability, and adherence to international standards in managing resources.”

UNSOS Head Aisa Kirabo Kacyira also expressed gratitude for the UK’s continued partnership, emphasizing the importance of maintaining reliable funding for life-saving operations.

“It is essential to have a Trust Fund that is predictable and dependable,” said Kacyira. “I urge all partners to step forward and contribute as we continue supporting Somalia’s transition toward stability and security.”

The latest contribution of $3.9 million adds to a series of UK grants made over the past year, including £5 million in February 2025, £5 million in September 2024, £2.75 million in April 2024, £5 million in January 2024, and £5 million in December 2023. Since 2021, the UK has provided over £40.73 million (approximately $50 million) to the Somali Security Forces Trust Fund.
