London (KAAB TV) – The United Kingdom has announced a renewed financial commitment of more than $30 million (approximately £23 million) to bolster security reform efforts in Somalia.
This latest contribution underscores the UK’s long-standing partnership with Somalia and its role as a key international supporter of peace and stability in the Horn of Africa.
The funding package includes $8 million (£6 million) allocated to the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS) and an additional $22 million (£16.5 million) designated for the African Union Support Office in Somalia (AUSSOM).
The aid aims to enhance the operational capabilities of Somali security forces and support the ongoing transition from African Union-led peacekeeping to Somali-led security operations.
Strategic Non-Combat Support for Somali Forces
A significant portion of the $8 million directed to UNSOS will provide essential non-combat logistical support to Somali Security Forces. This includes supplies such as food rations, tents, medical equipment, and casualty evacuation (CASEVAC) services.
These resources are crucial in enabling Somali forces to carry out joint operations effectively with African Union troops under the AUSSOM framework.
Currently, UNSOS provides critical support to approximately 18,900 Somali military and police personnel deployed across the country. With this new financial injection, the UK’s total contribution to UNSOS since 2021 now exceeds $58 million (£46 million).
Strengthening International Cooperation
The announcement was made during a high-level donor conference for AUSSOM, co-hosted by the United Kingdom, the Federal Government of Somalia, the African Union, and the United Nations, held on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.
The event brought together numerous international partners, reflecting the global community’s collective commitment to fostering peace, security, and long-term stability in Somalia.
Since 2021, the UK has invested nearly $140 million (£102.5 million) in support of AUSSOM and its predecessor operations, reaffirming its leadership role in Somalia’s security sector development.
A Reliable Partner for Regional Stability
The UK government emphasized that this renewed support reflects its enduring dedication to working hand-in-hand with Somali institutions, the African Union, and the UN to advance security sector reform and empower Somali-led governance.
The assistance is also seen as part of a broader regional strategy to counter violent extremism, reduce instability, and support long-term development in the Horn of Africa.
The UK’s contributions not only bolster immediate security needs but also lay the groundwork for Somalia’s transition to self-reliant, accountable national security institutions, a vital step toward achieving sustainable peace and prosperity.
