U.S. Maintains Funding Stance on AUSSOM Amid Regional Security Concerns

|

Mogadishu (KAAB TV) — The United States has reaffirmed its unchanged position on the funding of the African Union Support Mission in Uganda (AUSSOM), according to U.S. Ambassador to Uganda William W. Popp, who spoke to reporters Monday in Kampala.

“The U.S. decision to fund AUSSOM remains consistent with last year’s policy,” Ambassador Popp stated during a press briefing, underscoring that Washington’s stance has not shifted, despite ongoing reviews of peacekeeping operations in the region.

His comments come as Ugandan officials continue to call for increased international support for AUSSOM, which plays a key role in combating insurgent groups and promoting regional stability in East Africa.

Although Ambassador Popp did not disclose specific funding figures or the rationale behind the decision, he reaffirmed the United States’ broader commitment to regional security through alternative means—such as military training programs and humanitarian assistance.

Uganda, a leading contributor of troops to AUSSOM, has warned that the mission’s operational effectiveness could be compromised without sustained international financial backing.

Last year, the United States reduced its direct financial support for AUSSOM, shifting resources toward bilateral security initiatives. This move was prompted by concerns over the mission’s overall effectiveness and accountability.

Despite the reduction in direct funding, diplomatic sources report that the U.S. remains engaged in discussions with regional partners to reassess the mission’s mandate and explore alternative funding mechanisms.

Uganda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has yet to issue an official response to Ambassador Popp’s remarks.

Established to counter violent extremism and bolster regional security, AUSSOM continues to operate in high-risk areas across the Horn of Africa.
