U.S. Launches Airstrike on Al-Shabaab in Southern Somalia

The United States military carried out an airstrike targeting Al-Shabaab militants in Somalia’s southern Jubbaland regional state on July 8, as part of ongoing counterterrorism operations conducted in coordination with the Somali government.

In a statement released on Friday, the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) said the strike was carried out approximately 90 kilometers (56 miles) northwest of the port city of Kismayo.

The military did not disclose whether any militants were killed or injured, nor did it provide an assessment of the operation’s effectiveness.

AFRICOM said the strike forms part of continued U.S. support for Somali security forces in their efforts to weaken Al-Shabaab, the al-Qaeda-linked militant group that has waged an insurgency in Somalia for more than 15 years.

The United States has maintained a sustained campaign of precision airstrikes against Al-Shabaab, targeting the group’s fighters, senior commanders, and operational infrastructure.

The operations are intended to disrupt the group’s ability to plan and carry out attacks against Somali security forces, civilians, and international partners.

The latest strike comes as Somalia continues military operations against Al-Shabaab across several regions, while the government works to strengthen the capabilities of its national security forces with support from international allies.
