U.S. Funding for AU Mission in Somalia Faces Delays Amid Geopolitical Concerns

|

Mogadishu (KAAB TV) – The United States may take considerable time to decide whether to resume funding for the African Union peacekeeping mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), following a recent meeting of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on East Africa and the Horn of Africa.

The meeting addressed ongoing political developments and the role of foreign powers operating in the region.

Lawmakers voiced concern over the influence of external actors, particularly Turkey, on Somalia’s internal affairs.

The U.S. has previously stated that Somalia does not meet the criteria for the UN Security Council’s 2719 funding framework—widely regarded as the most effective model for supporting peace operations.

Instead, Washington has advocated for alternative funding mechanisms.

Recent reports indicate that African Union leaders are planning a visit to Washington to engage with the U.S. administration and other potential donors.

This comes in the wake of the cancellation of a key donor meeting that was scheduled to take place last month in Doha, Qatar.

It remains uncertain whether the issue of funding for the AU mission in Somalia will be addressed during U.S President Donald Trump’s visit to Qatar this week.
