U.S. Airstrike Kills 10 Al-Shabaab Militants, Including Key Finance Leader

MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – The U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) reported that an airstrike conducted on December 31, 2024, killed 10 al-Shabaab militants.

The airstrike took place in Beer Xaani, Somalia, approximately 35 kilometers northwest of Cooperative Security Location Kismayo.

According to the initial post-strike assessment, no civilians were harmed in the attack.

In addition to the airstrike, AFRICOM stated that U.S. forces provided support to Somali troops by evacuating soldiers who were attacked while engaging al-Shabaab fighters.

Separately, AFRICOM said it conducted another airstrike on 24 December  at approximately 10km southwest of Quyno Barrow that resulted in the death of senior al-Shabaab leader, Mohamed Mire and another al-Shabaab militant.

Mire, also known as Abu Abdirahman, was responsible for al-Shabaab’s regional governance in Somalia for the last 15 years.

“In addition to being one of al-Shabaab’s longest serving members, Mire served as the interior minister and played a key role in the group’s strategic decision-making,” the statement sad.

Mire, who was al-Shabaab’s finance head, played a significant role in the 2013 WestgateMall attack and the 2019 DusitD2 attack in Nairobi, Kenya.

Al-Shabaab has confirmed the death of Mire.
