Two Somali Migrant Women Found Dead Near Cyprus Coast

QUBRUS (Kaab TV) – Two Somali women have died in Cyprus after being swept away by powerful sea currents while swimming near Oroklini Beach, according to local police authorities.

The incident occurred on Thursday evening when a group of people at the beach encountered dangerous sea conditions caused by strong waves and currents. Emergency response teams were immediately dispatched to the area after reports that several swimmers were in distress.

Preliminary reports indicate that at least three people were carried away by the rough waters after entering the sea. Rescue teams managed to save one individual, while two women were later recovered from the water. Authorities subsequently confirmed that both women had died.

Officials said the victims were Somali women in their twenties who were legally residing and working in Cyprus. Their identities have not yet been publicly released pending notification of their families.

Police in Oroklini have launched an investigation into the tragedy and are collecting evidence and witness statements to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities are also examining the weather and sea conditions at the time of the accident.

The deaths have highlighted the dangers posed by strong coastal currents, particularly during periods of rough sea conditions.

Cyprus, a popular Mediterranean destination, occasionally experiences powerful currents and high waves that can pose serious risks to swimmers despite generally calm beach conditions throughout much of the year.
