France (KAAB TV) – Two people have died and hundreds more have been injured or arrested following violent celebrations across France after Paris Saint-Germain’s (PSG) historic 5–0 victory over Inter Milan in the 2025 UEFA Champions League final.
The match, held in Munich, marked PSG’s first-ever Champions League title.
Fatalities and Injuries
The French Interior Ministry confirmed that two individuals lost their lives during the post-match unrest. A 17-year-old boy was fatally stabbed in Dax, while a 23-year-old man was struck and killed by a vehicle in Paris while riding a scooter amidst the celebrations. In addition, 192 people were injured nationwide, including 22 police officers and 7 firefighters.
One police officer in Coutances suffered serious eye injuries from fireworks and is currently in an artificial coma.
Widespread Unrest and Arrests
The celebrations quickly descended into chaos, particularly in Paris. On the Champs-Élysées, crowds clashed with riot police, leading to the deployment of tear gas and water cannons.
Authorities reported that 559 individuals were arrested across France, with 491 of those detained in Paris alone. Of the total arrests, 320 people were placed in police custody.
The unrest also resulted in significant property damage, including over 200 vehicles being set ablaze and numerous storefronts vandalized. The French Interior Ministry reported 692 fires across the country during the disturbances.
Official Response
French authorities have condemned the violence, attributing the unrest to a minority of individuals intent on causing disorder.
Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin stated that the police’s decisive actions prevented further fatalities, acknowledging that while some officers used tear gas inappropriately, their overall response was necessary to maintain public safety.
Despite the violence, celebrations continued in parts of Paris and other cities. The French Football Federation and PSG have yet to comment on the incidents.
Authorities are expected to conduct a full investigation into the events surrounding the celebrations.
