Trump Imposes New Tariffs on Indian Imports, Citing Russian Oil Purchases as Justification

|

New Delhi (KAAB TV) – In a move that has sparked immediate diplomatic tension, former U.S. President Donald Trump has signed a new executive order imposing additional tariffs of up to 25% on a wide range of goods imported from India. The action, according to Trump, is a direct response to India’s continued purchase of Russian oil, which he argues undermines Western efforts to isolate Russia economically.

Speaking during a press briefing, Trump defended the decision, stating,

“If India wants to maintain close economic ties with the United States, it must act like a true ally. It is unacceptable for India to persistently purchase Russian oil, which directly finances Putin’s war efforts in Ukraine.”

The statement marked one of the clearest signals yet that Trump’s administration intends to leverage economic pressure on nations that do not align with U.S. foreign policy objectives, particularly in relation to Russia.

India wasted no time in issuing a strong rebuttal. The Ministry of External Affairs released an official statement condemning the tariffs as “unjustified, unilateral, and contrary to international trade norms.” The government emphasized that India’s energy decisions are based on national interest and sovereignty.

“India will not compromise its strategic autonomy. Our energy policy is determined by national needs, and we will not accept coercive measures that attempt to dictate our choices,” the statement read. “We are prepared to take all necessary steps to counter these unjust tariffs and will explore appropriate legal and economic responses.”

The development marks a significant escalation in trade and diplomatic tensions between the two countries. While the United States and India have enjoyed growing strategic ties in recent years, especially in areas like defense and technology, the disagreement over Russian oil has become a persistent point of friction.

Trade analysts warn that the imposition of such tariffs could have far-reaching economic consequences, affecting key sectors such as pharmaceuticals, textiles, and technology services, where India has a strong export presence in the U.S. market.

As both nations dig in, it remains unclear whether this latest dispute will lead to a broader trade war or whether diplomatic negotiations will defuse the situation in the coming weeks.
