Hargeisa (KAAB TV) – The president of Somaliland, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro, has strongly denied reports that his government has discussed with the US government to resettle Palestinian refugees, stressing that no official request has yet been received.
Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro, who gave an interview to Sky News Arabia, denied reports that Somaliland is recognized as a place to resettle Palestinians displaced from Gaza, after a statement by US President Donald Trump about the resettlement of refugees in other countries.
“Somaliland values its cooperation with the United States in the fields of economy, military and diplomacy, but we have not been contacted about this issue. Every issue of this magnitude requires complete discussions,” said Irro.
He said that Somaliland relentlessly supports the rights of Palestine, and called for a diplomatic decision to be reached in line with a broad Arab consensus. We added that Somaliland has close relations with several Arab countries, and is committed to playing an effective role in regional affairs.
Irro’s statement coincides with the increasing number of comments that resulted from a recent statement by US President Donald Trump, who suggested that the Palestinians be moved from Gaza to other countries. The Israeli media has since announced that Somaliland and Puntland are among the places that may be settled, although there is no official news from either side of Washington or Hargeisa.
This statement from the leader of Somaliland comes at a critical time when the region is going through complicated political activities. Irro, who recently participated in the summit of world governments in Dubai, declared that his administration is focusing on economic development, strengthening diplomatic relations, and maintaining the political stability of Somaliland in the Horn of Africa.
