Mogadishu (KAAB TV) – Somalia’s Minister of Justice and Constitution, Hassan Maalin, has accused the opposition groups of obstructing the laws issued by the Government and Parliament, especially those related to the country’s election process.

Speaking on Thursday, Minister Maalin stressed that there is no one or military force that has the power to disrupt the democratic process of electing representatives and conducting elections with one person and one vote.

“The idea of an election cannot be contested as it has come at the right time,” said the minister, underlining the government’s commitment to ensuring free and fair elections. He also stressed the importance of maintaining an election environment where citizens can participate without fear.

The Somali government and the opposition groups are accusing each other in the media, while both sides are focusing on the country’s election plan. In October 2024, the heads of the federal government, together with the heads of three states and the governor of Mogadishu, agreed on the framework for the first one-person, one-vote elections in Somalia.

The President of Puntland Said Abdullahi Deni and the President of Jubbaland Ahmed Mohamed Islam (Madobe) opposed the structure, showing the division within the Federal system.

Despite the opposition, it remained steadfast in its decision to implement electoral reforms. Minister Maallin reiterated that the government’s goal is to create a fair and inclusive process that allows all citizens to participate, a step that is considered important for strengthening democracy and governance in Somalia.
