Tensions Rise in Marka After Reported Clash on Outskirts

|

Security tensions have risen in Marka, the administrative capital of Somalia’s Lower Shabelle region, following reports of an armed confrontation on the outskirts of the city involving government forces and local fighters.

The reported clash was said to have involved Gorgor special forces, which are part of the Somali National Army, and local forces associated with the Biimaal clan.

Details about casualties remain unclear, with conflicting accounts emerging from the area and no comprehensive official statement confirming the number of people killed or wounded.

Gorgor forces have been seen around Marka in recent days. Local reports indicate that the federal government deployed the troops to strengthen security in the city and reinforce government forces operating in the area.

At the same time, forces aligned with the self-declared South East administration have maintained a presence in Marka and have claimed control over parts of the city and some government facilities.

The presence of competing armed groups has increased concerns over the possibility of further confrontation.

Despite reports of fighting, Marka’s acting mayor, Abdirahman Omar Ali, who is aligned with the self-declared South East administration, said the situation in the city remains calm.

He said there has been understanding and cooperation between his administration and Gorgor forces, particularly in efforts to maintain stability and protect civilians.

His comments appear aimed at easing concerns following reports of military movements and clashes in and around the city.

However, the differing accounts underscore the sensitivity of the security situation and the competing political and military interests operating in Marka.

Marka has increasingly become a focal point of political and security competition over who should control government institutions and assume responsibility for security in the city.

The federal government wants its forces to operate fully in Marka, while the self-declared South East administration seeks to maintain its influence over the city and surrounding areas.

Local security forces and clan-based militias also play an important role in Lower Shabelle, where political disagreements and disputes over local authority can quickly develop into armed confrontations.

Residents are concerned that continued tensions could escalate into wider fighting, potentially disrupting commercial activity and exposing civilians to deaths, injuries and displacement.

Marka’s strategic location in Lower Shabelle also makes instability there significant for surrounding communities and security operations in the region.

Traditional elders and community leaders could play an important role in preventing further escalation by bringing the competing sides into dialogue.

A negotiated political and security arrangement involving the federal government, local authorities, traditional leaders and the various armed forces could help reduce tensions and prevent Marka from becoming the scene of a larger confrontation.

For now, the conflicting accounts over the reported fighting highlight the need for restraint and clear communication from all sides.

Any armed confrontation inside or around the city risks imposing a heavy cost on civilians and further destabilizing an area already facing significant security challenges.
