Tensions Rise Between Two Waaberi Police Officers in Mogadishu

|

Tensions have reportedly escalated at the Waaberi district police station in Mogadishu after two senior officers, allegedly armed with heavy weapons, confronted each other over a dispute linked to a recent change in the station’s leadership.

Preliminary reports indicate that the disagreement began after one of the officers was removed from his position.

The dispute has reportedly left the police station in a tense situation, raising concerns that an internal administrative disagreement could develop into an armed confrontation.

The officers involved have been identified as a senior officer known as Mooshin and the station’s former deputy commander, who is reportedly refusing to accept his dismissal.

There has been no official confirmation of the incident, and details remain unclear regarding who ordered the removal, when the decision was implemented and the reasons behind the disagreement.

The reported standoff appears to be linked to changes in the station’s leadership, with one of the officers allegedly unwilling to hand over his responsibilities following the decision to replace him.

Disputes over appointments and leadership positions within security institutions can create serious challenges when command structures and administrative procedures are contested.

The situation at Waaberi has drawn particular concern because of reports that both officers are carrying heavy weapons while facing each other inside a police facility.

Police stations are responsible for protecting the public, enforcing the law and responding to security threats. A confrontation between senior officers at such a facility could disrupt its operations and potentially put personnel and nearby residents at risk.

There are also concerns that other officers stationed at Waaberi could become divided along the lines of the two officials, further complicating efforts to restore order if the dispute is not resolved quickly.

Attention is now focused on the Banadir Regional Police Command and the Somali Police Force headquarters, which are expected to clarify the circumstances surrounding the dispute and take steps to restore discipline within the station.

Several questions remain unanswered, including why the deputy commander was removed, who authorised the decision, why he is reportedly resisting the handover and what disciplinary or administrative measures the police leadership intends to take.

The reported standoff at Waaberi highlights the importance of clear command structures, institutional discipline and accountability within Somalia’s security agencies.

An official statement from the police leadership is still awaited to establish what happened and how the situation will be resolved.
