HARGEISA, Somaliland (Kaab TV) – The Taiwan Representative Office in Somaliland today announced the 2025 Taiwan Scholarships during an official ceremony held in Hargeisa.
The scholarships are granted to young Somaliland students seeking to pursue higher education in Taiwan after completing their studies at local universities.
“This symbolizes the partnership, friendship, and cooperation of Taiwan-Somaliland relations established since August 17, 2020,” the Taiwan Representative Office said in a statement.
Describing the program as “precious cradles for cultivating nation-building talents,” Taiwan highlighted its continued commitment to supporting Somaliland’s education sector.
Last year alone, Taiwan awarded scholarships to 32 young Somalilanders, enabling them to study at leading universities across Taiwan.
Taiwan, a stable and prosperous country in East Asia, opened its diplomatic mission in Somaliland in 2020. Since then, both sides have exchanged high-level visits, strengthening bilateral ties.
In 2023, Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs began officially referring to Somaliland as a country—making Taiwan the only state in the world to recognize Somaliland in this capacity.
With its advanced economy and strong reputation in technology and higher education, Taiwan has become an increasingly attractive destination for Somali students.
The scholarship initiative is expected to empower Somaliland’s youth—particularly those without the financial means to study abroad—and contribute to the country’s long-term development.
