Mogadishu (Kaab TV) — Somalia’s federal government says all humanitarian food aid removed from a warehouse affected by expansion works at the Port of Mogadishu has been fully returned to the World Food Programme (WFP).

In a statement issued late Saturday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the government takes full responsibility for the incident and expressed regret, reaffirming its commitment to humanitarian principles and cooperation with international partners.

“All humanitarian commodities removed from the affected facility have been returned in full to the World Food Programme,” the ministry said.

To prevent disruptions to aid deliveries, the government announced it has allocated a larger and more suitable warehouse for WFP within the port area. Officials said the new facility will enhance storage capacity and ensure the secure, uninterrupted distribution of humanitarian assistance to vulnerable communities.

The government also acknowledged the need for stronger coordination and information-sharing with donors and aid agencies. It said it will review the circumstances surrounding the incident and introduce measures to improve communication and prevent similar issues in the future.

The clarification follows sharp criticism from the United States, which said it would pause certain forms of assistance benefiting the Somali government after accusing officials of demolishing a U.S.-funded WFP warehouse and illegally seizing donor-funded food aid.

A senior U.S. State Department official for foreign assistance said the destruction of the warehouse and the handling of food supplies raised serious concerns about respect for humanitarian operations and donor agreements.

Somali authorities have said the warehouse, known as the “blue warehouse,” was located in an area undergoing port expansion and repurposing. They previously maintained that the construction works did not affect the custody, management, or distribution of humanitarian assistance.

In its latest statement, the Foreign Ministry emphasized Somalia’s “full commitment to transparency and accountability” and described its partnership with WFP, the United States, and other donors as vital to meeting the needs of millions of Somalis facing food insecurity.

The government said resolving the issue is essential to maintaining trust and ensuring continued humanitarian cooperation at a time when Somalia remains heavily dependent on international aid.

Washington (Kaab TV) — CThe United States has suspended all assistance programs benefiting Somalia’s federal government following allegations that Somali officials destroyed a World Food Programme (WFP) warehouse and confiscated food aid intended for civilians, the State Department said Wednesday.

In a statement, the department said the suspension followed reports of what it described as “unacceptable actions” involving a U.S.-funded WFP facility. According to U.S. officials, the incident allegedly involved the demolition of the warehouse and the seizure of approximately 76 metric tons of donor-funded food assistance meant for vulnerable populations.

“The Trump Administration has a zero-tolerance policy for waste, theft, and diversion of life-saving assistance,” the State Department said, confirming that all ongoing U.S. assistance programs benefiting the Somali Federal Government have been halted.

The department said aid would only resume if Somali authorities accept responsibility for the alleged actions and implement corrective measures. It did not specify when the incident took place or identify those involved, and the allegations have not been independently verified.

A WFP spokesperson said the warehouse played a critical role in emergency operations at a time when nearly one-quarter of Somalia’s population — an estimated 4.4 million people — is experiencing crisis-level hunger or worse. The spokesperson added that WFP is working with authorities to ensure the safe storage of food supplies and remains committed to delivering aid to vulnerable communities.

It remains unclear how much U.S. assistance will be affected or how long the suspension will last. The State Department did not respond to requests for further details.

The move comes amid broader reductions in U.S. foreign aid under President Donald Trump and increased scrutiny of aid oversight. The administration has also intensified criticism of Somali immigrants in the United States, including in the wake of widely publicized fraud allegations involving child-care programs in Minnesota.

During the final year of former President Joe Biden’s administration, the United States provided approximately $770 million in assistance to Somalia, though U.S. officials said only a small portion of that funding went directly to the Somali government.

NAIROBI (Kaab TV) — The ALPS group — a coalition comprising the governments of the United States, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, along with the African Union and the United Nations — has strongly condemned a deadly attack on a United Nations humanitarian convoy in Sudan that left five aid workers dead and destroyed critical life-saving supplies.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the families, colleagues, and communities of those who were killed while working to assist others in desperate need,” the coalition said in a joint statement.

The attack occurred on Monday night near the town of El Koma in North Darfur province, as the convoy was en route to the city of El Fasher.

The United Nations confirmed the deaths and the destruction of several aid trucks.

According to UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, the convoy — a joint operation by the World Food Programme (WFP) and UNICEF — consisted of 15 trucks and had traveled more than 1,800 kilometers from Port Sudan, carrying vital nutrition and food supplies.

“This horrendous act of violence is devastating,” Dujarric told reporters at a press briefing in New York on Tuesday.

“Multiple trucks were burned, and critical humanitarian supplies were destroyed. This was the first UN humanitarian convoy that was going to make it to El Fasher in over a year.”

The UN said negotiations were underway with local authorities to ensure safe passage to El Fasher when the attack occurred.

The perpetrators of the assault remain unidentified, and Sudan’s rival factions are trading blame.

The ALPS coalition emphasized that attacks on civilians, aid workers, and humanitarian assets constitute serious violations of international humanitarian law.

“We urgently reiterate the need for full respect of international humanitarian law, including the protection of civilians and humanitarian personnel,” the statement read. “We call on all parties to allow and facilitate unhindered humanitarian access to people in need.”

Sudan has been engulfed in a brutal civil war since April 2023, when conflict broke out between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The war has displaced millions and has been marked by widespread atrocities, including ethnic violence and mass sexual violence, particularly in Darfur.

The humanitarian crisis continues to worsen, with large parts of the population now dependent on aid for survival.
