Washington (Kaab TV) – The U.S. government has temporarily suspended all immigration applications coming from 19 countries, according to an official press statement.

This move comes a week after an attack in Washington in which two National Guard soldiers were killed.

The immigration agency USCIS had already halted all asylum procedures last Friday. The agency’s director, Joseph Edlow, said the decision was driven by the need for much more rigorous screening of foreign nationals.

Some of the countries now facing suspended immigration applications were already on the list of nations subject to travel restrictions under former President Trump.

The affected countries include: Venezuela, Cuba, Haiti, Sierra Leone, Togo, Equatorial Guinea, Chad, the Republic of Congo, Sudan, Somalia, Libya, Burundi, Yemen, Iran, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Myanmar, and Laos.

This decision comes as U.S. President Donald Trump once again intensified his criticism of the Somali community in Minnesota, stating that he does not want immigrants coming from East Africa. He claimed they do not contribute positively to the country.

There are growing fears that an operation targeting undocumented immigrants will soon begin in the cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, focusing on individuals without legal status.

Washington DC (KAAB TV) – President Donald J. Trump has signed legislation to reopen federal government agencies after a prolonged 43-day shutdown, the longest in U.S. history.

The shutdown began when the President and members of Congress failed to reach an agreement on funding for a proposed wall along the U.S.–Mexico border—one of Trump’s key campaign promises.

The budget standoff resulted in the freezing of funding for numerous government departments and agencies, halting many public services and leaving federal operations in partial paralysis. As the impasse dragged on, its impact spread widely across the country.

The newly signed law, passed by bipartisan votes in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, authorizes temporary funding to restore full government operations while negotiations over border security continue.

By approving the measure, lawmakers aimed to relieve the mounting pressure on federal employees and the public.

Speaking from the Oval Office, President Trump announced that federal agencies were resuming normal activity. He acknowledged that the lengthy shutdown had caused hardship for millions of Americans, especially the federal workforce.

“I know this has been a difficult period,” he said, emphasizing that the government’s reopening would begin immediately.

During the shutdown, many essential and non-essential services were disrupted. Approximately 800,000 to 1.4 million federal workers were either furloughed or required to work without pay, creating financial strain for families nationwide.

Critical assistance programs, including food aid for low-income households, faced delays and uncertainty, leaving vulnerable communities at heightened risk.

The effects were also felt in sectors such as aviation, where staff shortages contributed to flight delays at major airports. National parks, public safety agencies, and administrative offices likewise struggled to operate without adequate funding.

With the government now reopened, Congress and the White House are expected to continue negotiations in search of a long-term agreement on border security and immigration funding.

The hope is that a lasting solution will prevent another shutdown and restore stability to federal operations and the millions of Americans who rely on them.

Washington, D.C. (KAAB TV) – In a move that has escalated already simmering geopolitical tensions, former U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he had ordered the deployment of two U.S. nuclear-powered warships in response to provocative remarks by Dmitry Medvedev, the former President of Russia and current Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council.

The decision, announced via Trump’s social media platform, followed a sharp verbal confrontation between the former U.S. president and Medvedev. Trump claimed that Medvedev’s recent remarks warranted a show of force, citing the need to respond decisively to what he described as “reckless and inflammatory rhetoric.”

“Based on the inflammatory statements of former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev—statements that suggest a dangerous lack of judgment and restraint—I have ordered the immediate deployment of two nuclear warships to strategic positions in proximity to Russian territorial waters,” Trump posted online. “We must be prepared in case these foolish and passionate declarations reflect real intent.”

Medvedev, who served as Russia’s president from 2008 to 2012 and remains a close ally of President Vladimir Putin, had earlier criticized Trump’s proposal to impose tariffs on countries importing Russian oil—specifically naming India. Medvedev warned that such actions could constitute what he described as an “end game,” potentially leading to a direct military confrontation between the U.S. and Russia.

“These threats to penalize nations for purchasing our energy resources cross a dangerous red line,” Medvedev reportedly said in a statement. “It is the kind of economic aggression that, if pursued further, could spiral into war.”

Trump’s show of military readiness comes as Russia intensifies its ongoing attacks on Ukraine. Over the past week, Russian forces have ramped up their assault on civilian targets, including a devastating missile and drone strike on the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv on Thursday. The attack killed 31 people and wounded more than 150, prompting Ukrainian authorities to declare Friday a national day of mourning.

In his statement, Trump also called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to agree to an immediate ceasefire, warning that failure to do so would trigger severe economic sanctions from the United States and its allies.

“The world is watching. If Putin does not de-escalate this madness, there will be consequences that Russia cannot afford,” Trump stated.

While the White House has not yet commented on Trump’s declarations, political analysts warn that rhetoric from both sides is dangerously heightening the risk of miscalculation in an already volatile international landscape.

As diplomatic tensions continue to mount, many international observers are urging restraint from both Washington and Moscow, calling for dialogue over displays of force.

During the call, Trump urged Putin to consider ending the war, but the Russian leader rejected an immediate ceasefire. While both sides agreed to pursue a full ceasefire, Putin only consented to a temporary 30-day halt on attacks targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.

Putin also declined to sign a long-term ceasefire agreement recently negotiated by Trump’s team with Ukraine after a meeting in Saudi Arabia. Instead, he assured Trump that Russia would cease targeting Ukrainian energy facilities during this period.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that his country’s infrastructure had been hit by a significant Russian drone strike. He emphasized that Putin had firmly rejected a complete ceasefire, despite the phone discussion with Trump.

Earlier, Putin informed President Trump that a full ceasefire could only be viable if Ukraine’s allies ceased military support for Kyiv.

Trump’s special envoy for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, confirmed that additional discussions aimed at establishing a ceasefire would take place on Sunday in Saudi Arabia.

WASHINGTON (KAAB TV) – Donald J. Trump was sworn in today as the 47th President of the United States, after his victory in the November election last year.

Today’s event marks the end of four controversial and troubled years in office, including assassination attempts and several serious legal cases.

Mr. Trump will be sworn in today inside the Rotunda of the United States Congress, instead of outside, citing the cold weather in Washington, D.C. This will be the first indoor swearing-in event in 40 years.

There are also several famous people from the “tech bros,” including Elon Musk, who is a close friend of Mr. Trump, the CEO of Meta Mark Zuckerberg, and Shou Zi Chew, the director of TikTok, which came from the US ban on the TikTok app and was closed for hours before the presidential candidate announced that he would suspend the ban.

Trump has sent invitations to several world leaders, including Xi Jinping of China, Javier Milei of Argentina, and Giorgia Meloni of Italy, making him the first president to do so of the presidential candidate who does this.

Trump also promised to sign nearly 100 executive orders on his first day in office, vowing to make sure “the recession closes and ends four years of recession in America.”

He added: “We’re going to give him the best day, the biggest week, and the most amazing percentage of the first 100 days of a presidency in American history.”

This evening will conclude with a series of festivities across Washington, D.C.

Today’s swearing-in ceremony is very different from that of Mr. Biden in 2021. At that time, security was tightened due to the riots that occurred on January 6, while the COVID-19 epidemic also greatly limited the population of the area.
