Mogadishu (Kaab TV) – The United Nations has welcomed ongoing consultative talks between Somalia’s federal government and the opposition alliance, the Somali Future Council, emphasizing the importance of “good faith” negotiations as the country approaches a critical constitutional deadline.

In a statement released on Thursday, the United Nations Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS) described the meeting in Mogadishu as a constructive step toward resolving a longstanding political deadlock surrounding the organization of national elections.

“UNTMIS encourages the parties to further strengthen dialogue and consensus-building for the future, working with good faith, togetherness, and in a timely manner,” the mission said in a post on its official social media channels.

The high-level talks were chaired by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud at the presidential palace in Mogadishu and brought together senior government officials alongside prominent opposition figures.

Notably, the discussions included the participation of the presidents of Puntland and Jubaland, highlighting the national scope of the negotiations.

Political analysts note that Somalia has faced repeated delays in holding timely elections, which have frequently been hindered by disagreements between federal and regional authorities.

With the constitutional timeline looming, the UN’s call for constructive engagement underscores the international community’s concern over the need for a credible and inclusive electoral process.

The outcome of these consultations is expected to play a decisive role in shaping Somalia’s political landscape, offering a potential pathway to end years of political gridlock and promote national unity.

Mogadishu (Kaab TV) – Somalia on Friday took over the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council for January, marking the first time the country has held the role since its previous term on the council in 1971–72.

Calling the moment historic, Somalia’s ambassador to the United Nations, Abukar Dahir Osman, said at a news conference that the country was “deeply honored” to assume the presidency following its return to the council after 54 years. He described the development as a major milestone for Somalia.

Osman said Somalia’s election to the council and its assumption of the presidency reflect the country’s commitment to strengthening multilateralism.

Over the past year, he noted, Somalia has worked to play a constructive role on the council, striving to act as “a voice of reason, a bridge builder, and a principled advocate” for international law, the UN Charter, civilian protection, and the peaceful resolution of conflicts.

“As we assume the presidency this month, Somalia will uphold the highest standards of diplomacy and multilateral cooperation,” Osman said. He added that the presidency would focus on efficiency, transparency, inclusivity, and consensus-building.

He announced that Somalia’s flagship event will be held on Jan. 26, when the Security Council convenes a high-level debate on promoting and strengthening the rule of law in maintaining international peace and security.

Osman said the discussion is especially timely as the UN Charter approaches its 80th anniversary, offering an opportunity for reflection on progress made and challenges that remain. The debate will be chaired by Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.

In addition, Somalia will host an open debate on the Middle East on Jan. 28, which has also been elevated to a high-level meeting and will be chaired by President Mohamud.

The Security Council presidency will rotate to the United Kingdom in February.

New York (Kaab TV) – Most members of the United Nations Security Council have criticized Israel’s recent recognition of Somaliland, warning during an emergency meeting that the move could destabilize Somalia and have wider regional repercussions, including for Palestinians in Gaza.

The meeting, held Monday in New York, was called after Israel became the first country to formally recognize Somaliland, a self-declared state that Somalia considers part of its sovereign territory.

Fourteen of the 15 Council members opposed the decision. The United States was the only member that did not condemn Israel, though it emphasized that its own policy on Somaliland remains unchanged.

Somalia’s ambassador to the UN, Abukar Dahir Osman, urged the Council to reject what he called an “act of aggression,” warning that the recognition threatens Somalia’s unity and could undermine stability in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region. He also raised concerns that the move might be connected to proposals to relocate Palestinians from Gaza to northern Somalia.

“This utter disdain for law and morality must be stopped now,” Osman said.

The United States acknowledged Israel’s right to establish diplomatic relations but stressed that Washington has not altered its stance.

“There is no announcement to make regarding U.S. recognition of Somaliland,” said U.S. Deputy Ambassador Tammy Bruce, noting that American policy remains unchanged.

Israel’s Deputy Ambassador to the UN, Jonathan Miller, defended the decision, insisting it was not meant as a hostile act toward Somalia. He said recognition should be seen as an opportunity and does not preclude future dialogue between Somalia and Somaliland.

Several countries expressed concern about the broader implications of Israel’s move. Speaking for the Arab League, UN envoy Maged Abdelfattah Abdelaziz opposed any actions arising from the recognition that could facilitate forced displacement of Palestinians or the use of northern Somali ports for military purposes.

Pakistan’s Deputy Ambassador Muhammad Usman Iqbal Jadoon described Israel’s recognition as “deeply troubling,” particularly given past references to Somaliland as a potential destination for displaced Palestinians from Gaza.

Permanent Security Council members China and the United Kingdom also opposed the move. China’s UN envoy, Sun Lei, said Beijing strongly opposes actions that could divide Somalia’s territory, warning against supporting separatist movements for geopolitical gain.

Non-Council members, including South Africa, were invited to speak as well. South Africa’s UN Ambassador Mathu Joyini reaffirmed her country’s support for Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, citing international law, the UN Charter, and the African Union’s founding principles.

MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – The United Nations Security Council is expected to renew the mandate of the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) before it expires at the end of December.

The Council will also review the renewal of Security Council sanctions regime 2713 on Al-Shabaab—including the maritime arms embargo—which is set to expire on December 13.

This decision is linked to the mandate period of the Panel of Experts supporting the 2713 Sanctions Committee, whose term is scheduled to end on January 13, 2026.

These developments come at a time when AUSSOM is facing significant funding challenges that are affecting both the mission’s operations and those of the UN Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS).

The financial constraints pose serious risks to ongoing security and stabilization efforts in the country. The African Union has recently urged the international community to urgently ensure predictable and sustainable funding so that AUSSOM personnel receive their salaries, logistical support, and operational resources.

AU officials have warned that continued funding shortages could undermine hard-won gains in the fight against Al-Shabaab and jeopardize the safety of areas already recovered from the group, putting the security of Somali communities at risk.

Countries supporting AUSSOM have been encouraged to increase their financial contributions to ensure that the mission remains unified, effective, and capable of helping Somalia achieve lasting peace.

MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – On October 8, the United Nations Human Rights Council approved the conclusion of the mandate of the Independent Expert on the situation of human rights in Somalia.

Since 1993, the human rights situation in Somalia has been monitored and reported on by an Independent Expert appointed by the United Nations.

The position is currently held by Ms. Isha Dyfan from Sierra Leone.

The mandate of the Independent Expert, which is renewed annually, is due to expire at the end of October 2025.

Recently, the Federal Government of Somalia requested the closure of the office of the Independent Expert on Human Rights, arguing that it no longer wished for reports documenting human rights violations in the country to be published.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s administration claimed that it has already established a national human rights commission, although critics describe it as lacking independence. The commission is composed of nine members, all serving as government advisers.

Independent human rights organizations working in Somalia, media associations, and international bodies have expressed deep concern that the timing of the Independent Expert’s mandate ending coincides with increased human rights violations against civilians.

The main concern, they say, is that the end of this mandate will mean the loss of internationally recognized human rights reporting on Somalia—at a time when the media faces continuous pressure and attacks from both the government and armed groups.

NAIROBI (Kaab TV) — The ALPS group — a coalition comprising the governments of the United States, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, along with the African Union and the United Nations — has strongly condemned a deadly attack on a United Nations humanitarian convoy in Sudan that left five aid workers dead and destroyed critical life-saving supplies.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the families, colleagues, and communities of those who were killed while working to assist others in desperate need,” the coalition said in a joint statement.

The attack occurred on Monday night near the town of El Koma in North Darfur province, as the convoy was en route to the city of El Fasher.

The United Nations confirmed the deaths and the destruction of several aid trucks.

According to UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, the convoy — a joint operation by the World Food Programme (WFP) and UNICEF — consisted of 15 trucks and had traveled more than 1,800 kilometers from Port Sudan, carrying vital nutrition and food supplies.

“This horrendous act of violence is devastating,” Dujarric told reporters at a press briefing in New York on Tuesday.

“Multiple trucks were burned, and critical humanitarian supplies were destroyed. This was the first UN humanitarian convoy that was going to make it to El Fasher in over a year.”

The UN said negotiations were underway with local authorities to ensure safe passage to El Fasher when the attack occurred.

The perpetrators of the assault remain unidentified, and Sudan’s rival factions are trading blame.

The ALPS coalition emphasized that attacks on civilians, aid workers, and humanitarian assets constitute serious violations of international humanitarian law.

“We urgently reiterate the need for full respect of international humanitarian law, including the protection of civilians and humanitarian personnel,” the statement read. “We call on all parties to allow and facilitate unhindered humanitarian access to people in need.”

Sudan has been engulfed in a brutal civil war since April 2023, when conflict broke out between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The war has displaced millions and has been marked by widespread atrocities, including ethnic violence and mass sexual violence, particularly in Darfur.

The humanitarian crisis continues to worsen, with large parts of the population now dependent on aid for survival.
