In a statement released on Thursday, the United Nations Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS) described the meeting in Mogadishu as a constructive step toward resolving a longstanding political deadlock surrounding the organization of national elections.

“UNTMIS encourages the parties to further strengthen dialogue and consensus-building for the future, working with good faith, togetherness, and in a timely manner,” the mission said in a post on its official social media channels.

The high-level talks were chaired by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud at the presidential palace in Mogadishu and brought together senior government officials alongside prominent opposition figures.

Notably, the discussions included the participation of the presidents of Puntland and Jubaland, highlighting the national scope of the negotiations.

Political analysts note that Somalia has faced repeated delays in holding timely elections, which have frequently been hindered by disagreements between federal and regional authorities.

With the constitutional timeline looming, the UN’s call for constructive engagement underscores the international community’s concern over the need for a credible and inclusive electoral process.
