In a statement released on Tuesday, the UK government emphasized that it does not recognize Somaliland’s independence, stressing that any change to the region’s status must result from dialogue between Mogadishu and Hargeisa.

“We maintain that any change to Somaliland’s status depends on mutual agreement between Mogadishu and Hargeisa, conducted through dialogue, and must align with the purposes and principles of the UN Charter,” the statement said. “We regret any actions that could undermine peace and security in the region.”

The UK called for renewed efforts by the Federal Government of Somalia and Somaliland authorities to resolve their differences and cooperate on shared security challenges.

“Al-Shabaab and other terrorist groups exploit internal divisions in Somalia,” the statement noted. “We encourage Mogadishu and Hargeisa to engage in dialogue, supported by regional bodies and the international community, to address these divisions.”

London also highlighted the importance of sustained international support for Somalia’s security transition. The statement noted that earlier this month, the UN Security Council renewed authorizations for the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), extended UN logistical support via the UN Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS), and maintained sanctions aimed at weakening Al-Shabaab.

In September, the UK pledged over $30 million to support Somalia’s security transition, including $22 million for AUSSOM. The statement reaffirmed the UK’s role as a close and longstanding partner of Somalia and its commitment to assisting the federal government in building a secure and stable nation.

The UK also welcomed the peaceful conduct of the Mogadishu local council elections on December 25, 2025, reiterating its support for Somalia’s democratic aspirations and urging all political actors to work together to reach consensus on the next steps in the country’s political process.
