WASHINGTON (Kaab TV) – A report from the United States Department of State submitted to the U.S. Congress has once again reaffirmed Washington’s position on Somalia, emphasizing that the United States recognizes the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

According to the report, the United States maintains engagement and cooperation with the administration in Somalia’s northwestern region, commonly known as Somaliland, but stressed that all such relations are conducted in coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia.

The statement noted that Washington consults with the Somali federal government regarding assistance and cooperation programs involving Somaliland and continues to share information with Mogadishu on security and counterterrorism matters.

The report also indicated that investment opportunities in Somaliland face challenges partly because of the region’s reluctance to directly engage with Somalia’s federal government, particularly on issues involving international agreements and development cooperation.

“The United States recognizes the Federal Republic of Somalia, including Somaliland. We recognize Somalia’s unity and territorial integrity,” the report stated. It added that Somaliland’s refusal to coordinate with the federal government complicates potential U.S. investment projects in strategic infrastructure such as the Port of Berbera and Berbera International Airport.

The U.S. State Department, which oversees American foreign policy, further stated that both Mogadishu and Hargeisa remain important partners in security cooperation and efforts to combat extremist threats in the Horn of Africa region.

Washington has repeatedly stated in previous declarations that it does not formally recognize Somaliland as an independent state and continues to support a unified Somalia within internationally recognized borders.

The latest statement comes amid renewed diplomatic discussions and growing regional debate over Somaliland’s push for international recognition, as well as increasing foreign interest in the strategically important Red Sea and Gulf of Aden corridor.
