The appointment comes at a time when the Turkish government has been actively involved in mediation efforts between Somalia’s Federal Government and opposition groups following recent political tensions in Mogadishu.

Ambassador Ferhat Alkan has been serving in Turkey’s diplomatic service since 2001 and has previously worked at Turkish embassies in Washington, Beijing, and Kabul.

Between 2011 and 2014, he also served as Head of Protocol for Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, a role that placed him among the senior officials involved in managing the president’s diplomatic engagements.

Prior to his appointment to Somalia, Alkan had been serving as Turkey’s ambassador to Mozambique since January 2025.

Academically, the newly appointed ambassador holds both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Political Science and International Relations.

His appointment comes as Turkey — one of Somalia’s closest international allies — continues efforts to help ease Somalia’s political tensions through dialogue and mediation between the Federal Government and opposition leaders.

Turkey has maintained strong political, economic, and security ties with Somalia for more than a decade, playing a significant role in infrastructure development, humanitarian assistance, military training, and diplomatic support.
