In an interview with Ethiopian media, Ambassador Welch was asked about Ethiopia’s ongoing efforts to secure access to the sea.

He responded that he supports the progress made at the Port of Berbera, the activities underway there, and the prospect of Ethiopia and Somaliland reaching a trade agreement.

“I can understand that Ethiopia, a country experiencing economic and population growth, needs access to multiple commercial ports,” said Ambassador Welch. “The UK government supports the work taking place at the Port of Berbera and also supports a cargo agreement to facilitate the smooth movement of goods between the port and Ethiopia.”

He noted that he comes from a country with hundreds of ports and therefore understands the challenges faced by landlocked nations. He also called on the Ethiopian government and other countries in the region to de-escalate tensions, emphasizing that the region needs cooperation and that Addis Ababa should pursue its objectives peacefully.

“We advocate resolving any tensions through peaceful dialogue,” he said. When asked about the importance of sea access for Ethiopia, Welch explained that beyond enabling trade with the wider world, it is also vital for strengthening Ethiopia’s commercial ties with African countries.

In a separate interview with CNN Business Arabic, President Cirro stated that a trade agreement between Somaliland and Ethiopia is expected to be finalized soon. “We are engaged in talks with Ethiopia on a cargo agreement, which I hope will be concluded in the near future,” he said.

He added that he aims to foster a peaceful region where trade can thrive. In particular, he expressed readiness to enter into an agreement with the United States government regarding the trade of valuable minerals found in Somaliland.

Somaliland currently operates one of the most modern ports in the region. The Government of the United Arab Emirates has invested more than $400 million in the development of the Port of Berbera, its airport, and the road linking Berbera to Ethiopia.

Ethiopia was previously granted a 19 percent stake in the port, but this share was later revoked after it failed to meet the agreed conditions.
