Tanzania (KAAB TV) – A diplomatic row has erupted between the Embassy of the Federal Government of Somalia in Tanzania and the Somali Embassy in Kenya, centering on who holds the legal authority to represent Somalia’s interests in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The Somali Embassy in Tanzania, which claims official jurisdiction over Somalia’s diplomatic affairs in the DRC, expressed surprise and disapproval after learning that Gabriel Ibrahim Abdulle, Somalia’s ambassador to Kenya, had recently led a delegation to Kinshasa, the capital of the DRC.

According to a statement issued by the Tanzanian-based Somali mission, the trip was undertaken without prior consultation or coordination with their office—something they described as a violation of diplomatic protocol and a breach of standard operating procedures under Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MOFAIC).

Ambassador Abdulle, on the other hand, defended his visit, stating that it followed more than a year of ongoing discussions with the DRC Embassy in Nairobi and Somali business stakeholders residing in or connected to the DRC. His delegation reportedly included a mix of Somali and Kenyan businessmen aiming to explore economic cooperation and opportunities in the DRC.

The visit triggered widespread debate on social media platforms and was covered extensively by local media in both Somalia and the DRC, raising questions about internal coordination within Somalia’s diplomatic corps.

The core issue revolves around the ambiguity regarding which Somali mission is officially accredited to manage diplomatic and consular affairs in the DRC. This lack of clarity has now manifested in public discord between two prominent Somali diplomatic posts.

Despite the growing attention the dispute has received, Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not yet released an official statement addressing the matter or clarifying the rightful diplomatic authority over the DRC.

Observers note that the incident underscores broader issues of coordination and communication within the Somali foreign service, which could impact the country’s international diplomatic standing if not swiftly addressed.

Tanzania (KAAB TV) – In Tanzania, it was announced that the Marburg virus has broken out, which has killed some people in the country, and the government has already started efforts to prevent the virus from spreading further.

The president of Tanzania, Samiya Suluhu Hassan, announced that the Marburg virus has broken out in her country, which is a virus similar to Ebola.

She said that efforts are underway to prevent the spread of the disease in the country, and she added that she is confident that they will overcome the new Marburg virus that has been seen in their country.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said a week ago that there are suspected cases of the Marburg virus in Tanzania, and nine cases of the disease have been recorded in the country, with eight people dying in five days.

Tanzania’s Minister of Health, Jenista Mhagama, denied in a statement that the Marburg virus was found in their country, and noted that the suspected people who died when tested did not have the virus.

NAIROBI, Kenya (Reuters) – A prominent Tanzanian activist has been released after being “kidnapped” on Sunday by three armed men on the streets of Kenya’s capital Nairobi, her husband said, accusing Tanzania’s national intelligence service of responsibility.

Maria Sarungi Tsehai, a human rights defender critical of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, was kidnapped by three armed men and taken into a black car in the Kilimani neighbourhood on Sunday afternoon, Amnesty International said.

“I am now safe, many thanks to everyone,” Sarungi Tsehai wrote on X several hours later.

Her brief detention comes as the governments of both Tanzania and Kenya stand accused of abducting critics.

Sarungi Tsehai’s husband David Tsehai said the couple sought refuge in Nairobi four years ago after fleeing Tanzania.

“It was the scariest moment of my life,” he said in a video clip shared by the Law Society of Kenya late on Sunday.

“There is no doubt in my mind (it is) the thugs of the Tanzania Information and Security Services (TISS) who are behind this.”

Spokespersons for Tanzania’s government and TISS did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment. Kenya’s police spokesperson also did not respond to a request for comment.

President Hassan ordered an investigation into the abductions last year, when several government critics were abducted and injured or killed by unknown people, in a pattern by which, rights groups say, the government targets opponents in the run-up to national elections expected later this year.

Amnesty International researcher Roland Ebole said Sarungi Tsehai’s abduction was another example of “transnational repression that is happening on Kenyan soil,” accusations Kenyan authorities deny.

In November a Ugandan opposition figure was kidnapped in Nairobi and forcibly repatriated to Kampala where he faces charges in a military court.
