MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – Opposition lawmakers, calling themselves the Free Members of Parliament, have issued a press statement strongly warning against what they described as unilateral and unconstitutional amendments to the Constitution that bypass the formal procedures mandated by law.

The lawmakers cautioned that proposed plans to amend constitutional provisions—while confining parliamentary processes to the capital, Mogadishu—pose a serious threat to constitutional legitimacy, national unity, and the future of Somalia’s statehood.

They emphasized that defending the Constitution is neither an act of political opposition nor a pursuit of personal interests, but rather a national duty incumbent upon all public officials and state institutions.

The statement noted that Somalia’s Federal Constitution remains provisional and contains fundamental issues that require broad national consensus. These include the division and separation of powers, the management of natural resources, the structure and independence of the judiciary, and the relationship between the Federal Government and the Federal Member States.

The lawmakers argued that any constitutional amendment undertaken without inclusive national consultation, political agreement, and adherence to constitutional procedures would undermine the state-building process and could lead to political instability and social fragmentation.

They further warned that rushing constitutional amendments could severely affect public trust, national security, and overall stability, potentially opening the door to new political crises. They called on federal leaders, regional administrations, opposition groups, and civil society to assume collective responsibility and to prioritize national dialogue and inclusive consensus.

The statement also highlighted the role of constitutional institutions, stressing that the Constitutional Review Commission and the Federal Parliament hold the legal mandate over the amendment process, and that unilateral actions must be avoided.

The lawmakers addressed the international community, stating that continued support for Somalia should be anchored in three fundamental principles: national dialogue, inclusive political consensus, and respect for the Constitution. They underscored that defending the Constitution is, in essence, a defense of citizens’ rights, national unity, and the future of Somali children—an obligation that cannot be compromised.

Garowe (Kaab TV) – The President of Puntland, Said Abdullahi Deni, has stated that Somalia is currently facing an extremely complex and dangerous political phase that poses a direct threat to the very existence of the Somali state. He warned that this situation has also generated widespread mistrust toward the federal system.

President Deni explained that the country is experiencing an increasing level of political fragmentation, which he attributed to what he described as poor and misguided policies by the Federal Government of Somalia.

According to him, these policies have undermined the cooperative framework and consensus-based system that was originally agreed upon during the formation of the federal structure.

“Unity cannot be achieved through insults, threats, and verbal abuse. That is not genuine unity,” the president said, emphasizing that Somalis are one people, regardless of where they live.

He stressed that any attempt to amend or dismantle the constitution that was founded on national consensus directly harms Somalia’s unity. He added that anyone who violates or disregards the constitution is not working toward true national unity.

President Deni underlined that constructive dialogue based on mutual respect is essential and that contentious national issues must be resolved through collective agreement.

The President of Puntland officially announced that Puntland has withdrawn from the current federal system, citing repeated violations of the constitution—an agreement in which Puntland played a major and foundational role.

“The current government in Mogadishu does not govern in accordance with the law or the agreements upon which the federal system was established. This does not mean that we reject the Somali people or the unity of the country; rather, we reject a system that operates through division and conflict,” he said.

President Deni further clarified that Puntland remains open to participating in any legitimate and lawful national conference aimed at finding a comprehensive solution to Somalia’s political challenges.

He stated that Puntland is prepared to openly present its views and positions in such forums. However, he warned that if no genuine platform for dialogue is created, Puntland will take its own decisions based on constitutional principles and the rule of law.

He concluded by emphasizing that all actions taken by Puntland will be legal, rational, and free from emotion or political impulse, and that their sole purpose is to protect the rights, dignity, and future of the people of Puntland.

MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – The Federal Government of Somalia is deploying troops to areas in the Gedo region as tensions between Jubaland and Mogadishu reach a new high.

Unspecified numbers of troops were flown to the town of Baardheere on Tuesday.

The planes carrying these troops departed from Mogadishu’s airport.

The Federal Government has yet to comment on the reason for sending these troops to Gedo.

However, tensions between the Jubaland administration, led by Ahmed Mohamed Islan (Ahmed Madobe), and the Federal Government have been escalating.

Last week, a statement issued after the National Consultative Forum meeting indicated that the Federal Government is working to establish a “legitimate” administration in Jubaland, signaling that President Hassan Sheikh is seeking to create a new government structure different from Ahmed Madobe’s.

The deployment of these troops to Gedo comes shortly after the Federal Government lifted restrictions on the movement of aircraft to and from Doolow, a town in Gedo where a Jubaland-aligned administration operates.

For more than four months, air traffic between Doolow and Mogadishu had been restricted, with flights to Kismayo and Dhoobley forced to first pass through Mogadishu.

Elders Arrested in Garbaharey

Meanwhile, the tensions in Jubaland have now spread to other towns in Gedo.

Clan elders in Gedo reported that on Tuesday, they were arrested in Garbaharey, the regional capital of Gedo, after opposing the deployment of armed soldiers from Mogadishu into the region.

Sultan Ali Hashi stated that a group of elders was arrested from their homes early on Tuesday morning, with some of them being physically assaulted by police.
