The UK ambassador arrived in Somaliland for an official visit aimed at enhancing cooperation between the two sides.

He was accompanied by Louise Hancock, the UK Government Representative at the British Office in Somaliland.

According to Somaliland presidential spokesperson Hussein Aadan Cige (Deyr), President Irro thanked the United Kingdom for its historic relationship, longstanding engagement, and support for Somaliland, particularly in development, security sector strengthening, infrastructure, and democratic governance.

Irro said the strategic partnership between Somaliland and the UK was built on “historical trust, mutual respect, sustainable cooperation, and shared interests.”

“The President of Somaliland once again emphasized that the process of seeking international recognition for the Republic of Somaliland is irreversible, saying it is based on legal rights, historical background, and the will of the people of Somaliland,” Deyr said.

He said Irro called on the United Kingdom to play a meaningful role in supporting Somaliland’s recognition efforts.

The president briefed the ambassador on Somaliland’s development priorities and highlighted potential areas for expanded cooperation, including water management and climate adaptation, energy, security, education, healthcare, trade, investment, democracy, and strengthening government institutions.

Irro reaffirmed his government’s commitment to deepening ties with London, describing the UK as a long-standing strategic partner that has supported Somaliland’s development, security, and institution-building efforts.

He also urged the United Kingdom to play a meaningful role in supporting Somaliland’s recognition campaign, arguing that the bid is based on “legal grounds, historical background, and the will of the people of Somaliland.”

For his part, Ambassador Charles King said the UK government values its historic relationship and cooperation with Somaliland.

The ambassador praised Somaliland’s security, stability, democratic processes, institution-building, and development achievements, describing it as a positive example in the region for peace and political stability, according to Somaliland presidential spokesperson Hussein Aadan Cige (Deyr).

The UK ambassador confirmed that Britain would continue strengthening cooperation and support for Somaliland.

The meeting comes as Somaliland seeks greater international recognition while Somalia continues to face political disputes, electoral tensions, and security challenges.

Hargeisa’s ongoing push for international recognition

Somaliland’s efforts to secure international recognition continue as Hargeisa seeks to expand diplomatic engagement with foreign governments, following Israel’s recognition of Somaliland in late December 2025 and amid renewed calls from Somaliland leaders for wider international support.

The Somaliland government has described recognition as a long-term strategic priority, arguing that it is based on its historical status, separate governance structures, democratic institutions, and the aspirations of its people.

President Irro has repeatedly said that Somaliland’s recognition campaign is irreversible, urging international partners, including the United Kingdom, to play a greater role in supporting its bid for recognition.

The UK remains one of Somaliland’s most important historical partners, with longstanding ties dating back to the colonial period and continued cooperation in areas including development, security, and governance.

Somaliland’s diplomatic push comes at a time of heightened political challenges in Somalia, where disputes over constitutional changes, elections, and relations between the federal government and member states have deepened tensions.

Hargeisa argues that its relative stability, democratic elections, and functioning institutions distinguish it from the wider instability affecting parts of Somalia, while Mogadishu continues to oppose any move toward Somaliland’s international recognition, maintaining that Somaliland remains part of Somalia.

Speaking during Somaliland’s June 26 Independence Day celebrations on Thursday night, President Cirro said Israel informed Somaliland that it was prepared to recognize its sovereignty, while Denmark commended Somaliland’s progress in governance, peace, and development but stated that it was not in a position to grant recognition at this time.

According to President Cirro, his recent visit to Israel reinforced what he described as Israel’s commitment to recognizing Somaliland. He said his delegation received full state honors during the visit and signed a preliminary cooperation agreement covering key sectors, including security, agriculture, water management, and healthcare.

Cirro noted that cooperation in the water sector has already begun, revealing that 25 Somaliland engineers have completed training in Israel while another group of 25 engineers is currently undergoing similar training. He said the initiative is intended to strengthen Somaliland’s technical capacity in water resource management and infrastructure development.

The Somaliland leader also highlighted growing economic interest from Israeli businesses, stating that more than 1,000 Israeli companies had requested meetings with the Somaliland delegation during the visit. However, he said Israel’s Minister of Investment limited the engagements to 100 companies due to time constraints, describing the level of interest as a strong indication of investor confidence in Somaliland’s economic potential.

He further announced that the Speaker of Somaliland’s House of Representatives is expected to visit Israel in the near future following an official invitation from the Speaker of the Israeli Parliament, a move he said would help strengthen parliamentary and diplomatic relations between the two sides.

Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in May 1991 following the collapse of Somalia’s central government. Although it has maintained its own government, security institutions, currency, and democratic electoral processes for more than three decades, it has not received widespread international recognition as a sovereign state. The Federal Government of Somalia continues to regard Somaliland as an integral part of Somalia and opposes any unilateral recognition of its independence.

President Cirro’s remarks come amid intensified diplomatic efforts by Somaliland to expand its international partnerships and seek formal recognition, an objective that has remained at the center of its foreign policy for more than three decades. Rising tensions in the Middle East have once again placed Somaliland in the spotlight due to its strategic location near the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden—two of the world’s most critical maritime corridors.

It remains unclear whether the President will hold any informal meetings with UAE officials during his private stay.

In an interview with Al Jazeera Mubasher’s program Al-Masaiya, the minister said that reports related to the Jeffrey Epstein documents have shed light on foreign interference and activities aimed at undermining dialogue between the Federal Government of Somalia and Somaliland.

He noted that there have been communications and efforts by international companies, conducted through unofficial channels, seeking to push for the recognition of Somaliland as an independent state.

Ali Bal’ad emphasized that Somalia’s policy toward Somaliland is grounded in dialogue and mutual compromise, underscoring that Somalis are “one people, one language, and one religion.” He added that secessionist efforts do not reflect the collective will of the Somali people, and that recognizing Somaliland would not bring peace but instead could create instability affecting Somalia and the African continent as a whole.

The minister made it clear that Somalis will never engage in dialogue under pressure or threats.

Regarding Somalia’s stance toward Israel—particularly following Israel’s support for the recognition of Somaliland—Ali Balcad stated that Israel is obligated to respect Somalia’s unity and sovereignty. He stressed that Mogadishu will not engage in dialogue with any party that violates the country’s sovereignty.

The minister also accused Israel of planning to relocate Palestinians from the Gaza Strip to Somaliland, describing such a move as extremely dangerous to the security of the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea. He called on the international community to urgently prevent any action of this nature.

Speaking on regional security, the minister said that regional and international-level talks are ongoing to strengthen stability in the Red Sea and the Horn of Africa, given their critical importance to global trade and maritime navigation. He warned that any security disruption in the region would have widespread economic and security consequences.

The minister stated unequivocally that Somalia will not allow any foreign military base to be established on its territory without the approval of the federal government. He stressed that any attempt to introduce a foreign military presence would constitute a direct violation of national sovereignty, and that the government would take all necessary measures to prevent it.

He concluded by affirming that Somalia will continue to strengthen cooperation with countries that support its unity and sovereignty, particularly Saudi Arabia and Türkiye, emphasizing that Somalia’s stability is a cornerstone of overall regional stability.

Speaking in Las Anod during the inauguration of the newly formed North East State administration, President Mohamud said Palestinians have endured decades of conflict without abandoning their land and should not be turned into what he described as “stateless people.”

“For 70 years they have been shelled daily, artillery has been fired, yet they have not been displaced,” Mohamud said. “Are we now going to make it easy for them to be pushed off their land?”

He referred to the killing of children and civilians and the destruction of homes and cities, saying the devastation now resembles “the Day of Judgment.”

“There are people in the world known as stateless people,” he said. “They are alive, they are allowed to eat and drink to survive, but they have no rights, no sense of belonging. We do not agree for the Palestinian people to become stateless.”

Mohamud stressed that Palestinians cannot be relocated in any manner that deprives them of their political rights or land ownership, adding that Somalia would never accept such an outcome.

“Killing two birds with one stone is not possible,” he said. “We reject this.”

While both are national days of great importance, they carry different historical meanings: June 26 marks Somaliland’s independence from Britain in 1960, whereas May 18 is the day Somaliland withdrew from the failed union with Somalia in 1991 and reclaimed its independence.

First and foremost, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to all Somalilanders across the world on this momentous occasion. Happy 34th anniversary! May this celebration be joyful, meaningful, and lead to even greater celebrations in the years to come.

The emotions and pride that come with this anniversary are not limited to those within Somaliland. As a member of the Somaliland diaspora, I, along with thousands of others around the world, join in the celebrations. This day is dear to all of us.

The 2025 celebrations are expected to be as grand and inspiring as in previous years. Festivities have already begun across major cities including Hargeisa, Buroa, Borama, Berbera, Erigavo, and Gabiley.

These cities are filled with excitement, as thousands gather waving the Somaliland flag, showcasing unity and unwavering support for the Somaliland cause. It sends a powerful message to all adversaries of Somaliland: the people are united in their determination.

Although Somaliland has not yet received international recognition since declaring independence in 1991, there is much to celebrate. The country has come a long way—through trials and triumphs—toward building a stable, peaceful, and democratic nation.

This day is a time of unity for all Somalilanders, at home and abroad. It is a moment to reflect on the long journey, the sacrifices, and the achievements that brought Somaliland to where it is today, rooted in good governance, transparency, and accountability.

This article is not intended to delve deeply into the historical events that led to Somaliland’s reassertion of independence. For those interested in a more detailed analysis, I recommend my article written for the 30th anniversary.

Why is this day so special for Somaliland and its people?

This day symbolizes the end of more than three decades of governance under Somalia (1960–1990). It marks a hard-won return to freedom, independence, and self-governance after a painful struggle that cost thousands of lives. It’s a day to honor our martyrs and patriots who sacrificed everything so future generations could live in peace and dignity.

On this occasion, we should remember:

1. The Buroa Conference held between 27 April and 18 May 1991 is also remembered on this day. It is a day when the representatives and delegates of the different clans of Somaliland, after a lengthy consultation, fully agreed to reclaim the sovereignty of Somaliland to create a broad government based on the representation of all the regions of the country.
2. This day also reminds us of the reconciliation conference held in the towns of Berbera, Sheikh, Borama and Buroa, all of which were organised to bring the Somaliland communities closer and create a peaceful environment. National consultation conferences eventually created a peaceful environment in which a government system based on law and order was established. It is also unforgettable and especially remembered on this day the demobilisation of SNM fighters, who were disarmed to provide them with a system of reintegration and discipline.
3. This day also reminds us of the resilience of the people of Somaliland and the long journey they have gone through to achieve their nation-building. It is clear that the resilience of the people of Somaliland is strong, and a good example is the burning of the Waaheen market in 2022, which had a devastating impact on the livelihood of thousands of people. It was heart-breaking to see how the fire devastated Waaheen Market. With the spirit and resilience of the people of Somaliland, the Waaheen Market has been rebuilt and officially opened at the end of 2024. The people of Somaliland have achieved great progress in 34 years with their resilience.
4. Elaborating on the value of this day, we also remember that on this day, the democratic elections were held in Somaliland. The last good example is the presidential and political organisation elections held on November 13, 2024.  The manner and the style in which the power was transferred from the former president, His Excellency Muse Bihi Abdi and the elected president, His Excellency Abdirahman Abdillahi (Ciro), showed professionalism. The event of power transfer went well, and it is a testimony to the fact that Somaliland and its people are committed to holding fair and free elections since 2003. Both leaders mentioned in their speeches that it is marking a significant moment in Somaliland’s democratic journey. Somalilanders will never forget and will remember for a long time that the power transfer model between the two leaders was smooth and peaceful. Since 1991, Somaliland has had six successive presidents, most of whom were elected through direct elections. These presidents all came with a leadership vision based on the stability and maintained the peace and security that Somaliland has enjoyed during the last 34 years.
5. May 18th is a day we remember the institutions we have established since 1991, such as the executive branch, the legislative branch, the judicial branch, the police and military force, the electoral commission, the central bank, political parties and many more institutions and independent organisations.
6. The celebration of 18th May reflects on the rebuilding efforts and progress in social and economic aspects that Somaliland has made with little help from the international community. There is hope and optimism for vibrant towns and cities in Somaliland, which every morning see thousands of children and young people going to their schools and colleges with peace and stability.

The role of Somaliland youth in strengthening the existence of Somaliland

This anniversary highlights the vital role youth play in shaping Somaliland’s future. Across the country, thousands of young people participated in the celebrations leading up to May 18. Their pride, energy, and unity reflect their commitment to their homeland.

Today’s youth are the backbone of the nation, just as the youth of the past were the fighters who reclaimed Somaliland’s sovereignty. Through social media and activism, the youth continue to advocate for Somaliland’s recognition and future.

As the largest demographic group in a population of around 6 million, the youth must carry forward the legacy of unity and resilience. One patriotic song often sung during May 18 celebrations goes:

Kani waa calankaan lahaa (This is my flag)

Kaygii weeyaan kani (This is my own)

Aniga kii laygu dhalay (The one that I was born into)

Haddana laygu hoos korshoo (The one that I was raised under).

To truly value the commemoration of May 18th, today’s youth must understand that Somaliland can only build a better future by thoroughly studying its past. To shape a brighter and more prosperous future, young people must learn from the mistakes of previous generations. In the context of Somaliland’s journey, it is essential that the youth engage with their country’s history. This occasion offers an opportunity to reflect on the struggles Somaliland has endured and to appreciate the tangible achievements it has made along the way. As Winston Churchill once said, “A nation that forgets its past has no future.”

Finally, it is evident that Somaliland’s youth cannot aspire to a better future unless they unite their efforts. It is crucial for them to work together in the interest of Somaliland’s progress and stability.

Somaliland Diaspora

The Somaliland Diaspora is not only celebrating the 18th May, the day of sovereignty was reclaimed, but also reflecting on the significant contributions of the Somaliland Diaspora to the economic and social progress of Somaliland.

The Somaliland Diaspora has always played an important role in Somaliland’s quest for international recognition. They will continue their commitment to promoting their country. Evidence of this is that thousands of Somaliland Diaspora members across the world are preparing events to welcome the celebration of the 18th of May.

The Somaliland people are confident that their Diaspora will effectively and intelligently promote the case of Somaliland. They believe it is time for the international community to recognise the reality on the ground. Somaliland and Somalia have been apart for 34 years. Somaliland Diaspora is committed to continuing its fight until the voice of Somaliland is heard. The Diaspora is part of the hope and aspirations of Somaliland, and it is hoped that they will keep the hopes alive.

Somaliland and neighbouring countries

We are aware that Somaliland has many enemies who do not want to see Somaliland succeed in gaining recognition from the international community. Among those enemies are the leaders of our neighbouring countries, such as Somalia and Djibouti. These leaders openly and directly expressed their opposition to Somaliland gaining any recognition.

We have witnessed that these two leaders have dedicated time and resources to weakening the existence of Somaliland. I do not shy away from stating that the regimes in Djibouti and Mogadishu have long opposed Somaliland’s case being brought to the platforms of the international community.

My aim is not to campaign for a situation where Somaliland will eventually enter into conflict or war with neighbouring countries Also, my purpose is not to express any hostility or hatred towards other Somali people living in Somalia, Djibouti, Kenya and Ethiopia, but it is important for the international community to know that the Somali Government has crossed all red lines and is attacking the existence of Somaliland.

Somalilanders also need to understand their collective responsibility to defend the country together when it comes to sovereignty and the interest of Somaliland.

A word to Somaliland friends

Our deepening relationships with friendly nations are increasing by the day. We have many supporters in the international community both political and non-political. We must work with our friends to continue advocating for Somaliland’s recognition, which is the only viable option for true stability in the Horn of Africa region and beyond.

Somaliland faces challenging yet exciting times as it enters its 34th year. The current President is key to maintaining and strengthening the unity of our nation. This is also true of the opposition parties; despite differences in political ideology what is common is the need to protect our sovereignty and its borders. We face naked aggression from Somalia in our eastern districts resulting in death and displacement. What we must not do is follow them into chaos and anarchy. Somaliland has been a beacon of hope in a sea of despair, a nation where each individual is truly free.
