BORAMA (Kaab TV) – Somaliland has formed an investigation committee to examine the cases of youths arrested following unrest in the city of Borama several nights ago.

The disturbances reportedly began after groups of young people gathered in parts of Borama and chanted slogans opposing the May 18 celebrations, which mark Somaliland’s declaration of independence. Witnesses said tensions escalated after security forces attempted to disperse the crowds, leading to clashes, tire burning, and protests in several areas of the city.

Police later carried out mass arrests, with reports indicating that more than 100 youths were detained.

However, regional authorities stated that not all those arrested were involved in criminal acts and confirmed that some had already been released after preliminary investigations.

The unrest is said to be linked to long-standing political and public divisions in the Awdal region over Somaliland’s political direction, representation, and public dissatisfaction among sections of the youth.

Opposition to the May 18 celebrations in Borama has surfaced periodically in recent years, with some local residents arguing that their concerns have not been satisfactorily addressed by the Somaliland administration.

Speaking to the media, Awdal Regional Governor Abdirashid Hassan Matan said the administration would not tolerate actions that threaten the region’s security and development.

“Anyone who stands against the development of the region will not be accepted. Those who engage in violence, tire burning, or acts that threaten public security and the public interest in public places, markets, and recreational areas will face legal action,” the governor said.

He also stated that security forces are continuing operations to track down individuals accused of encouraging youths to engage in unrest and disorder.

The governor thanked residents, religious leaders, elders, and parents for cooperating with security forces to maintain stability and for expressing support for the regional administration.

He further urged parents to closely monitor their children’s activities, adding that the committee established to review the arrests is currently assessing and separating the cases of those detained.

Hargeisa (Kaab TV) – The Hargeisa City Council has today elected a new mayor following an extraordinary session held at the headquarters of the Hargeisa Municipality.

Council members elected Abdirizak Maxamed Farah Wiwa as the new Mayor of Hargeisa, and Aadan Jaam’a Haddi Mideye as Deputy Mayor of the capital city.

In his first remarks after being elected, Mayor Wiwa said the session had concluded peacefully and pledged to accelerate the delivery of services and municipal work.

“It is thanks to God that this extraordinary session has concluded peacefully and with dignity. I promise to serve you and to take the work of the city further than where it currently stands, God willing,” Wiwa said.

He also called on members of the City Council to cooperate with him, share constructive advice, and work together for the development of Hargeisa.

The election came after the Hargeisa City Council earlier today officially removed the former mayor of the capital, Abdikarim Ahmed Mooge, along with his deputy, Khadar Ahmed Omar.

The motion of no confidence, which was submitted a day earlier, cited allegations related to failure to fulfil official duties and other administrative concerns, according to some council members.

Somaliland government media, which was present at the Hargeisa Municipality headquarters, reported that council members attended the session where the motion was debated.

The meeting was chaired by the Governor of Marodi Jeeh region, and the Secretary of the Hargeisa Municipality was also in attendance.

HARGEYSA (Kaab TV) – The Supreme Sultan of the Samaron clan, Sultan Abubakar Sultan Wabar Elmi, returned to Hargeisa on Wednesday after the Somaliland government granted him amnesty.

The Sultan was welcomed upon his arrival at Egal Airport, Hargeisa.

He told the media that he had decided to return following persistent efforts by Somaliland President Abdirahman Abdillahi Irro, who had maintained contact with him for a long time and repeatedly sent delegations to persuade him to return.

“I have always strived for the interests of the Samaron community and that of Somaliland,” Said Sultan Abubakar.

“I send my regards to the President of Somaliland, Abdirahman Abdillahi Irro, who sent elders and delegations to reach out to me,” he added.

Sultan Abubakar Wabar stated that he would hold meetings with Somaliland officials and emphasized that he had long campaigned for the rights of the Samaron community, similar to how now deceased Ali Khalif Galeyr “advocated for the rights of the people of the Sool region”.

Sources within the Somaliland government say the Sultan’s return came after President Abdirahman Irro officially granted him amnesty.

Sultan Abubakar Wabar had been in exile from Somaliland for more than ten years residing in Mogadishu, where he reportedly held several meetings with members of the Federal Government of Somalia.

The Sultan had previously been a leading figure in a movement seeking to separate Awdal state from Somaliland where officials from the Somali federal government stated on several occasions the plan to establish “Awdal State” as a key part of Somalia’s federal system.

The Sultan and several diaspora politicians also met with representatives from Djibouti, China, and Turkey, who supported efforts aimed at seceding the Awdal region in order to separate it from the rest of Somaliland.

Since Somaliland established ties with Israel, the Somali government in Mogadishu has intensified political and clan-based activities in Awdal State. However, local observers view Sultan Abubakar Wabar’s return to Somaliland as a major setback for the proposed “Awdal State” project.

MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – The Speaker of Somaliland’s House of Elders (Guurti), Saleebaan Maxamuud Aadan, on Thursday dispatched ten members of the council to the Awdal and Salal regions, where intermittent clan fighting has erupted over a land dispute.

The conflict reportedly stemmed from disagreements surrounding the Xeer Ciise customary law document, which one of the rival clans in the Salal region opposed being presented in the coastal town of Saylac.

The disagreement later escalated into a broader land dispute between communities in the two regions, posing a serious threat to public security and the free movement of civilians.

“Two communities killing each other is not a simple matter. I pray that you succeed in establishing lasting peace between them. You will not fail, but be prepared for initial challenges. There has never been a Somali community that rejected the intervention of elders,” Speaker Saleebaan said.

Meanwhile, a large delegation led by the Minister of Interior and Security, Cabdalle Maxamed Carab, has traveled to the Awdal and Salal regions, where they are holding meetings with elders from the rival clans involved in the conflict.

The delegation also includes the Minister of Defense, the Minister of Water Resources, the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of the Constitution, the Commander of the National Army, the Second Deputy Commander of the Police Force, and other senior officials.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Interior, the delegation will hold a series of consultations with various segments of the local communities during their stay in the regions.

Separately, the Eastern Burco community last night issued a call urging the warring clans to lay down their arms and engage in dialogue. The community also pledged to play a significant role in efforts to restore peace in the affected regions.

Mogadishu (Kaab TV) — Eric Trump, a senior executive in the Trump family business and son of U.S. President Donald Trump, has denied holding talks or discussing port investments with Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, following reports of a high-level encounter on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos.

A spokesperson for Eric Trump said President Abdullahi attended a dinner reception at which Eric Trump was present and took a photo with him, but emphasized that no private meeting took place.

“At no point did Eric Trump ever have a meeting with the Somaliland president,” spokeswoman Kimberly Benza said in a statement. “Nor did he discuss a port at any time. There were over 100 people in the room.”

Benza added that Eric Trump did not respond to or comment on the Somaliland president’s remarks during the event and that any interaction was limited to brief courtesies. “Pleasantries were exchanged—that is it,” she said.

At the closed-door dinner held on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum, President Abdullahi outlined investment opportunities in Somaliland, including its strategic deep-sea port of Berbera, located along one of the world’s busiest shipping routes.

Attendees at the dinner included Eric Trump and Israeli President Isaac Herzog. Israel last month became the first country to formally recognize Somaliland, more than three decades after the region declared independence from Somalia.

In a post on X, President Herzog said he was pleased to have met the Somaliland president at the Swiss resort, though he made no reference to Eric Trump. Two individuals present at the event said Eric Trump and President Abdullahi exchanged brief greetings when shaking hands at the beginning and end of the dinner but did not engage in substantive discussions.

Eric Trump holds no official role in the U.S. government but serves as a senior executive at the Trump Organization, which manages the family’s business interests across real estate, hospitality, and cryptocurrency ventures.

During President Trump’s first term, the Trump Organization adopted voluntary ethics guidelines prohibiting the pursuit of new business deals outside the United States. Days before the president’s second inauguration, however, the company announced revised guidelines removing that restriction.

Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but is not recognized by the United Nations or most of the international community. Israel’s recognition has drawn strong opposition from Somalia and several regional and international actors, who argue the move violates Somalia’s sovereignty and could further destabilize the Horn of Africa.

Borama (Kaab TV) – Members of Parliament Mohamed Abiib and Mukhtaar Hassan Maydhane jointly spoke out against the arrest of dozens of people who were detained in recent hours by Somaliland security forces in the city of Boorama, Awdal Region.

The two MPs said that the reason those people were arrested was because they were carrying the Palestinian flag, while the government of President Abdirahman Cirro has allowed people in Hargeisa to carry the Israeli flag.

They described it as illegal and a violation for people in Awdal to be arrested for carrying the Palestinian flag while those in Hargeisa are permitted to carry the Jewish (Israeli) flag. They called on the public to protest and reject what they described as the abuse of power being carried out.

“If someone in Boorama is arrested for carrying the Palestinian flag, while someone in Hargeisa is allowed to carry the Israeli flag, which religion and which constitution allows this? I say to our people: rise up and reject this. Cirro, the stick you used yesterday, today we will also take up that stick. Do not send us a Vice President; he himself is oppressed,” said MP Mukhtaar Hassan Maydhane.

Abiib and Maydhane stated that there is no security threat in the Awdal Region, but that the government of Abdirahman Cirro is creating tension by arresting civilians in order to provoke public sentiment.

They warned that they would lead an uprising against the detention of those arrested.

They also threatened to follow the same path taken by Sool, which is now a regional state recognized by the Federal Government. Abiib and Maydhane called on traditional elders to guide the future of the people of Awdal in a positive direction.

Hargeisa (Kaab TV) – Israel on Friday, December 26, 2025, formally recognized the Republic of Somaliland as an independent and sovereign state, marking a historic diplomatic milestone for the self-declared republic more than three decades after it unilaterally broke away from Somalia.

The recognition was announced following a videoconference meeting between Somaliland President Mohamed Abdullahi “Cirro” and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Both governments issued statements confirming the decision, which was formalized through a joint declaration of mutual recognition.

Israeli officials stated that the declaration, signed by Netanyahu, Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, and President Cirro, establishes full diplomatic relations, including the exchange of ambassadors and the opening of embassies.

In a statement from the Office of the President of Somaliland, the government “warmly welcomes and deeply appreciates the historic and principled decision by the State of Israel to officially recognize its sovereignty and independence,” describing the move as a landmark achievement in its pursuit of international legitimacy.

“This recognition represents a milestone in Somaliland’s longstanding quest for international legitimacy, reaffirming its historical, legal, and moral entitlement to statehood,” the statement read. It emphasized that the recognition reflects mutual respect and shared strategic interests between the two sides.

Prime Minister Netanyahu said the move reflects growing political, diplomatic, and strategic alignment between Israel and Somaliland.

“This declaration is in the spirit of the Abraham Accords,” Netanyahu said, referencing the U.S.-brokered agreements that normalized relations between Israel and several Arab states. He congratulated President Cirro, praising his leadership and commitment to promoting regional stability and peace.

Somaliland’s presidential office stated that the recognition underscores Somaliland’s record as “a stable, democratic, and responsible partner in the Horn of Africa,” and opens a new chapter for cooperation in security, diplomacy, and development.

Israel announced plans to expand cooperation with Somaliland in agriculture, health, technology, and economic development. Netanyahu also extended a formal invitation for President Cirro to visit Israel to discuss shared interests and priority issues.

Somaliland indicated that it intends to join the Abraham Accords framework, describing it as a platform for dialogue, cooperation, and regional peace. The statement affirmed Somaliland’s commitment to building constructive partnerships, promoting shared prosperity, and contributing to peace and stability across the Middle East and Africa.

Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar noted that relations between Israel and Somaliland had developed over the past year through sustained dialogue. He added that Israel’s foreign ministry had been instructed to institutionalize ties across multiple sectors.

“We will work together to promote relations between our countries and peoples, regional stability, and economic prosperity,” Sa’ar said. Netanyahu also expressed gratitude to Mossad Director David Barnea and Israel’s intelligence services for their role in advancing the agreement, while wishing the people of Somaliland “success, prosperity, and freedom.”

Somaliland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the announcement, stating that momentum was building and that additional official statements were expected.

Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 after the collapse of Somalia’s central government. Since then, it has maintained its own government, security institutions, and electoral processes, though it had not previously received formal recognition from any country.

The Federal Government of Somalia, which considers Somaliland an integral part of its territory, is expected to issue an official response to Israel’s announcement.

Laascaanood, Somalia (Kaab TV) – The leadership of SSC-Khaatumo has announced plans to hold a major conference aimed at integrating the entire Sanaag region into its administration—a move that could heighten tensions in the already divided and volatile region.

Speaking at a June 26 Independence Day event in Laascaanood on Thursday night, SSC-Khaatumo leader Abdikhadir Aw-Ali Firdhiye said the upcoming conference will bring together representatives from Sool, Sanaag, and Cayn to finalize a unified regional administration.

“A grand conference will be held to complete the establishment of this federal member state for the regions of Sool, Sanaag, and Cayn,” said Firdhiye, addressing hundreds of residents and local officials.

He emphasized that the Federal Government of Somalia, particularly the Ministry of Interior, will support and take part in the event.

“Delegates from across these regions will attend, and the Federal Government, through the Interior Ministry, will be involved as a facilitator,” Firdhiye added.

The move comes amid ongoing territorial disputes over Sanaag, a region deeply divided between parts aligned with Somaliland and others influenced by Puntland.

The western towns of Ceerigaabo, Laasqoray, and Ceel Afweyn are considered part of Somaliland, while the eastern towns—such as Badhan, Ceelbuh, and Dhahar—fall under Puntland’s control.

There is also a separate push by some local leaders and communities to establish an autonomous Maakhir State, with related meetings recently held in Mogadishu and other locations.

Firdhiye’s announcement raises concerns of renewed conflict, particularly in Ceerigaabo, which witnessed intense clan-based fighting earlier this year involving forces affiliated with both Somaliland and SSC-Khaatumo.

The violence resulted in deaths, injuries, and the displacement of civilians—many of whom have not yet returned.

In a separate development last month, Puntland’s Minister of Information, Mahmoud Aydid Dirir, said Puntland and SSC-Khaatumo remain constitutionally united and operate under a shared administration.

“There is no separation agreement yet,” he added.

Dirir, a native of Laascaanood, noted that officials and parliamentarians from Sool—including Puntland’s Vice President—remain part of Puntland’s governing structure, having been selected through local traditional elders.

As SSC-Khaatumo moves forward with its conference plans, questions remain about the potential impact on Sanaag’s fragile stability and how Somaliland and Puntland might respond to shifting political alignments in the region.
