“We are hearing that the Mogadishu government is once again boasting that it has rebuilt the 26th Division and that its forces are preparing to establish a base in eastern Sool,” President Irro said today while speaking at a ceremony marking the anniversary of the establishment of the Somaliland Police Force.

Irro described the move as reflecting what he called “Hassan Sheikh’s pursuit of a path towards genocide”.

The Somaliland president issued a warning to Somalia, claiming that Somaliland’s forces have the capability to seize the weapons and military equipment supplied to Somalia by foreign governments.

He pointed out that Somaliland’s population had fought against Somalia’s former military government despite having limited access to weapons, and ultimately defeated it, according to his remarks.

Irro said: “We hope Somalia’s reckless and self-destructive decision will provide an opportunity for our forces to acquire the weapons and modern military equipment that major countries around the world are supplying to Somalia in excessive quantities.”

He also claimed that much of the military equipment supplied to Somalia has already fallen into the hands of terrorist groups.

Irro accused the Somali government of creating “hostility and insecurity” in Somaliland, which he described as a peaceful and stable territory. He also called on the international community to take note of the situation.

The Somaliland president’s remarks come amid recent reports that armed forces have been seen in parts of the Sool region. The troops are reportedly under the authority of the Somali federal government and are said to belong to Somalia’s 26th Division.

The Sool region, which is claimed by Somaliland and currently divided between Somaliland and Somalia’s North Eastern State administration, remains one of the country’s most disputed territories. The region was the scene of fighting in 2023 between Somaliland forces and forces aligned with the Las Anod administration.
