Somaliland Eyes U.S. Recognition as President Irro Prepares Washington Visit

Somaliland is stepping up its long-running campaign for international recognition, with President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi “Irro” expected to travel to the United States in the coming days as Hargeisa seeks to build on recent diplomatic gains.

The planned visit comes less than a year after Israel became the first United Nations member state to formally recognize Somaliland as an independent country in December 2025, a move that significantly altered the diplomatic landscape surrounding the self-declared republic.

According to reports, Irro is expected to visit Washington and New York, where he may hold meetings with members of the U.S. Congress and Senate.

Reports have also suggested he hopes to meet President Donald Trump, although no such meeting has been officially confirmed.

The trip is widely viewed as part of Somaliland’s effort to persuade the United States to consider a policy shift similar to Israel’s recognition.

For more than three decades, Somaliland has sought international recognition while operating with its own government, security forces, currency, and institutions despite lacking formal recognition from most countries.

Somaliland is expected to highlight its strategic location along the Gulf of Aden and near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, one of the world’s most important maritime trade routes.

Officials in Hargeisa have also emphasized the importance of Berbera Port, which they view as a major economic and security asset that could strengthen cooperation with international partners.

Since Israel’s recognition, ties between Hargeisa and Jerusalem have deepened rapidly.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar visited Somaliland in January 2026, while President Irro traveled to Israel in June and opened a Somaliland embassy in Jerusalem, marking a new phase in relations between the two sides.

However, recognition by the United States would represent a far more significant diplomatic breakthrough.

Washington remains a key security and political partner of Somalia and has long supported Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Any shift in U.S. policy would therefore have major implications for the Horn of Africa and could reshape regional diplomacy.

Somalia has strongly opposed international recognition of Somaliland, arguing that the territory remains an integral part of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

Mogadishu condemned Israel’s recognition and has warned that similar moves by other countries would undermine Somalia’s unity and sovereignty.

Analysts say Irro’s visit will test whether Somaliland can convert its recognition by Israel into broader international support.

While the trip itself does not indicate that Washington is preparing to recognize Somaliland, it reflects Hargeisa’s growing diplomatic confidence and its determination to secure support from influential global powers.

If Somaliland were to gain recognition from a major power such as the United States, it could significantly strengthen its international standing, attract greater foreign investment, and open the door to wider diplomatic engagement.

For now, however, attention is focused on Washington and whether Irro’s visit will produce new commitments or closer ties between the United States and Somaliland.

Irro Accuses Federal Government of Bad Faith in Talks

Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi “Irro” has accused Somalia’s Federal Government of failing to act in good faith during previous rounds of dialogue between Mogadishu and Hargeisa, arguing that Somaliland made significant political concessions in an effort to reach agreements that would benefit both sides.

Irro said Somaliland had repeatedly entered negotiations with Somalia in good faith but claimed that agreements reached during those talks were later abandoned by Mogadishu.

“We have held talks with Somalia many times in good faith, and we have paid a very high political price. Unfortunately, Somalia later withdrew from some of the few but important agreements that were reached during those negotiations,” the Somaliland president said.

He said the experience of previous negotiations had exposed serious challenges in implementing agreements once they were reached.

According to Irro, future talks should therefore be based not only on reaching agreements but also on ensuring that both sides respect and implement the commitments they make.

The remarks come amid the long-running political dispute between Somaliland and Somalia’s Federal Government.

Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 and has since operated its own government, security forces and other state institutions.

Mogadishu, however, continues to regard Somaliland as part of Somalia and rejects its claim to internationally recognized independence.

The two sides have held several rounds of negotiations over the years, with discussions addressing political relations, security, economic cooperation and the broader question of Somaliland’s status.

Regional countries and international partners have at various times supported or hosted efforts to bring the two sides together, but previous negotiations have failed to produce a comprehensive and lasting settlement.

Irro’s comments suggest that the implementation of past agreements remains a central concern for Somaliland as it considers the possibility of future negotiations with Mogadishu.

President Irro: Sool Remains Part of Somaliland

Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi (Irro) has reaffirmed his administration’s claim over the Sool region, describing it as an integral part of Somaliland while calling for dialogue and reconciliation with local communities to address longstanding grievances.

Speaking on Wednesday at the conclusion of the 69th session of the Somaliland Council of Ministers, President Irro said his government remains committed to preserving peace, unity, and national cohesion.

He stressed that residents of Sool should be welcomed and that any disputes should be resolved through dialogue, mutual understanding, and political agreement rather than confrontation.

In a statement issued by the Somaliland Presidency, the president said that “the Sool region is part of the Republic of Somaliland, and the people of Sool are brothers and sisters of Somaliland.” He urged that community grievances be addressed through negotiations, reconciliation, and national unity.

The remarks came just days after Fahiima Yusuf Abdullahi (Fahiima Quuje) returned to Hargeisa after publicly announcing that she had withdrawn her support for the North Eastern Somalia Administration, a move that attracted significant political attention.

Although large-scale fighting between Somaliland forces and those aligned with the North Eastern Somalia Administration has subsided, tensions remain unresolved.

Both sides continue to hold prisoners captured during previous clashes, while broader political disputes over the future of the region have yet to be settled through negotiations.

The Sool region remains one of the most contested territories in northern Somalia. It is claimed by Somaliland, Puntland, and the North Eastern Somalia Administration, with each asserting sovereignty over the area.

Las Anod, the regional capital, is currently administered by the North Eastern Somalia Administration, which declared itself in August 2025 following months of conflict.

Separately, Aqil Hussein Aden Adde, a prominent traditional elder from the North Eastern Somalia Administration who played a role during the conflict in Las Anod, has reportedly defected to Hargeisa.

According to sources familiar with the matter, he traveled through Jigjiga in Ethiopia before arriving in Hargeisa following discussions with President Irro’s administration.

The elder previously held senior positions under the Somaliland administration but left Hargeisa after former Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi launched military operations in his home area, prompting him to side with his local community during the conflict.

His return is being viewed by observers as a potentially significant political development amid continuing efforts by Somaliland to rebuild support in the contested Sool region.
