Somalia has officially launched the reconstruction of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry headquarters in Mogadishu, replacing a nearly 50-year-old building as part of the government’s broader efforts to modernize public institutions, strengthen economic governance, and improve the delivery of government services.

Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre on July 11, 2026, laid the foundation stone for the new headquarters during a ceremony attended by senior government officials, business leaders, and representatives of the private sector.

The project is expected to provide the ministry with a modern administrative complex capable of supporting Somalia’s growing trade and investment agenda.

Minister of Commerce and Industry Jamal Mohamed Hassan said the ministry had operated from the same facility for about five decades, noting that the aging building no longer met the operational requirements of a modern government institution.

“This building has served the ministry for nearly 50 years despite its deteriorating condition. Today marks the beginning of a new chapter as we build a modern headquarters that reflects Somalia’s economic progress,” Hassan said.

Prime Minister Barre described the reconstruction as a strategic investment in Somalia’s economic future, emphasizing that strong public institutions are essential to promoting trade, industrial development, and private-sector growth.

“The Ministry of Commerce and Industry is one of the country’s most important economic institutions. Modern infrastructure is essential to improving public services, supporting national production, and creating an environment that encourages investment,” Barre said.

The minister also acknowledged the financial support provided by Somali business leaders, describing their contribution as a strong example of the growing partnership between the government and the private sector in rebuilding national institutions and supporting economic development.

The reconstruction forms part of Somalia’s wider infrastructure and institutional reform agenda aimed at strengthening state capacity, improving administrative efficiency, and attracting greater domestic and foreign investment.

In recent months, the Federal Government has also launched reconstruction projects for several key public institutions, including the Ministry of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation, as part of its long-term state-building strategy.
