Mogadishu (Kaab TV) – Mogadishu Opposition has announced that it will begin holding weekly protests in Mogadishu starting on June 4, with demonstrations scheduled every Thursday until a political agreement is reached on the country’s elections.

The announcement came during a press conference in Mogadishu attended by several opposition leaders, including former Somali President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, MP Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame, former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire, and other opposition figures.

Sharif Sheikh Ahmed stated that the terms of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, the federal government, and parliament had expired, arguing that any election conducted without broad political consensus could not be considered fully legitimate.

He said efforts had been made last week to reach an agreement on electoral issues, but the talks failed. He stressed that the election process should not be controlled by one side alone and called for consensus on the electoral committees, the voting system, and the election timeline.

Sharif Sheikh Ahmed also criticized the recent elections held in Mogadishu and Baidoa, saying they reflected the level of corruption and political division that could arise from elections conducted without agreement among stakeholders.

He further accused the government of deploying troops to dangerous areas affected by conflict and political tensions, claiming the move had resulted in the deaths of soldiers and military officers.

Meanwhile, Abdirahman Abdishakur said President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud should now be regarded as a “former president,” arguing that his constitutional term had expired. He called on residents of Mogadishu to participate in peaceful demonstrations planned after Eid, adding that the opposition would continue the protests until their demands are addressed.

Political tensions in Somalia have continued to escalate following the collapse of the latest talks between the government and opposition groups over the country’s electoral process and voting model.
