Mogadishu (Kaab TV) — Somalia’s intelligence agency (NISA) said at least three senior al-Shabab leaders were injured and several vehicles and facilities destroyed used by the militant group during an airstrike in the Hiiran region.

The National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) said on Friday that the operation was conducted in coordination with international partners in the (Buq Aqable) area, where al-Shabab was mobilizing new fighters.

NISA identified the injured commanders as Ali Hussein, described as a militia leader responsible for attacks in central Somalia; Mowliid Jiis, the group’s representative in Bulo Burde district; and Mohamed Hiiran, identified as al-Shabab’s representative in Jalalaqsi district.

According to the agency, the officials had been under surveillance for an extended period before the strike was carried out.

NISA also stated that the operation damaged facilities and vehicles used by the group. Follow-up operations destroyed five vehicles, including three combat vehicles.

The agency said one of the vehicles was equipped with a 39 mm anti-aircraft gun.

NISA described the operation as part of ongoing efforts to weaken al-Shabab’s capacity to organize attacks against civilians and government targets.

Al-Shabab, which is affiliated with Al-Qaida, continues to carry out attacks in central and southern Somalia despite sustained military pressure from Somali forces and international partners.

Hiiran remains a key battleground in the government’s campaign against the group, with repeated operations conducted around Bulo Burde, Jalalaqsi, and nearby areas.

In a statement, NISA said the militant was responsible for assembling and planting landmines used in attacks against security forces and civilians in the area.

The agency described the mission as a targeted and carefully coordinated operation intended to neutralize six individuals believed to pose a serious threat to the security of Afgooye and nearby areas. However, only one militant was confirmed killed during the operation.

“The operation was carried out with precision, leading to the elimination of the suspect and the seizure of an AK-47 rifle,” NISA said.

NISA did not release the identity of the individual killed and provided no details on whether there were additional casualties.

The agency said operations against al-Shabaab will continue until security is fully restored across the country.

Mogadishu (Kaab TV) – Somalia’s security forces, NISA, have reportedly begun harassing small business owners, particularly street vendors and shopkeepers.

These forces are allegedly demanding extortion payments of $30 from individuals who make a living through small businesses.

Those who refuse to pay are threatened with the destruction of their businesses, putting not only their livelihoods but also their families’ safety at risk. NISA claims that roadside shops obstruct traffic, using this as justification for their actions.

Many traders in the Bakara Market have reportedly had their businesses destroyed, with goods looted from tables and floors where they were conducting business. Business owners have expressed that their situation is becoming increasingly difficult, citing the silence of Hamar’s local government regarding tax issues as a source of deep frustration and additional challenges.

What began as an issue confined to Bakara Market has now spread to Seybiyano Junction, where numerous small businesses have been targeted. Operations to demolish shops continued after owners were unable to pay the $30 monthly extortion fee.

The stress on these small traders, many of whom operate on the streets of Mogadishu, is growing. This situation is casting further uncertainty over the daily lives of poor families who rely on the modest income from these businesses.

Extortion is also reported in the Hamarweyn district, particularly involving payments collected from Ganasata. A woman living in Hamarweyn, whose brother has reportedly been forced to pay NISA regularly, spoke about the ongoing harassment.

Mogadishu (KAAB TV) – Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) announced that its elite Gaashaan Special Forces have killed a senior Al-Shabaab commander long sought for orchestrating deadly bomb attacks and destabilizing communities across the Lower Shabelle region.

According to a government statement released Tuesday, the precision operation was conducted late Monday night in the Cumar Beere area.

The target, Hassan Siidoow Hussein, was identified as one of Al-Shabaab’s most influential field operatives in Lower Shabelle.

Authorities described him as the chief architect behind the group’s widespread use of improvised explosive devices (IEDs), which have caused heavy civilian casualties, hindered transportation, and disrupted economic activity along key supply routes.

Security officials added that Hussein played a central role in coordinating ambushes, roadside bombings, and logistical support for Al-Shabaab cells operating throughout the region.

His elimination, they said, represents a significant blow to the group’s ability to execute large-scale attacks.

Gaashaan forces also killed three armed militants who were escorting Hussein at the time of the operation.

NISA reaffirmed that counterterrorism operations will continue to intensify as part of the broader national effort to protect civilians, secure major transport corridors, and dismantle remaining insurgent networks across south-central Somalia.

The agency urged members of the public to stay vigilant and report suspicious activities or information related to Al-Shabaab or ISIS affiliates through official security hotlines and communication channels, emphasizing that community cooperation remains essential to sustaining recent security gains.

MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – On June 14, 2025, Somalia took a disturbing step backward. Mahad Mohamed Salad, a man accused of orchestrating widespread abuses, clan favoritism, and targeted attacks on civil society, and has links to Al-Shabaab was officially reinstated as director of the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA).

His return not only revives painful memories of unlawful detentions, journalist abductions, and extrajudicial killings—it signals that Somalia’s leadership remains willfully blind to the cries of its most vulnerable citizens, undermining what little progress the country has made toward justice, accountability, and peace.

Mr. Salad was first appointed on 26 May 2022 but dismissed on 4 April 2024 following sustained reports of human rights violations, corruption, and gross misuse of intelligence authority.

His tenure was marked by systematic targeting of journalists, civil society groups, minority communities, and the private sector.

Even more troubling are persistent allegations of links to terror networks, including involvement in the disappearance and suspected murder of NISA cybersecurity officer Ikran Tahlil Farah in 2021, who was reportedly handed over to Al-Shabaab operatives.

Despite public outcry and widespread suspicion, the case remains unsolved and has been deliberately silenced by government officials.

From the outset, Salad’s leadership of NISA was defined by fear. On 10 October 2022, NISA agents led by a former Al-Shabaab defector raided the office of the Somali Journalists Syndicate (SJS) in Mogadishu.

The next day, SJS Secretary-General Abdalle Ahmed Mumin was abducted by NISA agents at Aden Adde International Airport and held incommunicado in an underground cell, where he survived an assassination attempt. On 23 February 2023, under orders from Salad and in collusion with Deputy Information Minister Abdirahman Yusuf Al-Adala, Mumin was again abducted from a public meeting and held for 33 days in secret facilities, where he endured torture.

These cases were not isolated.

On 18 December 2022, UK-based Channel 4 News correspondent Jamal Muhumed Osman was detained and deported by NISA. On 20 February 2023, Radio Kulmiye reporters covering a public election were detained without charges.

On 17 August 2023, SJS Secretary of Human Rights Mohamed Ibrahim Bulbul was kidnapped after reporting on police corruption. He was detained for 56 days and subjected to physical and psychological torture. His tormentor was allegedly Mohamed Kafi Abukar, a known NISA officer and cousin of Mahad Salad.

The broader media landscape also suffered under Salad’s authoritarian rule. NISA embedded informants in newsrooms, prompting widespread self-censorship. Journalists fled Somalia en masse between 2022 and 2024, citing death threats, surveillance, and blackmail by NISA operatives. Those who remained were forced into silence, consolidating state control over public discourse.

Gruesome murder of Abdinasir Muse Dahable

In February 2024, Somalia was rocked by the gruesome murder of Abdinasir Muse Dahable, a UK-trained air traffic controller. Tortured and strangled, his body was found dumped in his apartment.

Abdinasir Muse Abdi, a Somali air traffic controller was found dead in his apartment in Mogadishu in April 2024.

Investigations implicated NISA officers under Salad’s command. One key suspect, Hassan Dahir, fled to Nairobi, while others allegedly involved in the torture and cover-up continued to operate with impunity. Journalists investigating the murder were warned to keep silent—or face death.

One month later, on 18 March 2024, a Turkish drone strike in Afgoye killed 23 civilians, including 14 children and 5 women from the marginalized Gorgaarte clan, based on faulty intelligence provided by NISA.

Survivors and grieving families were threatened by intelligence agents and government spokespersons when they tried to speak out.

Local reporters documenting the massacre were accused of terrorism and forced into hiding.

A boy survived from the Turkish drone attack in March 2024.

During Salad’s rule, private businesses were not spared. In early 2024, Hormuud Telecom and its subsidiary Salaam Bank were raided by armed NISA agents. Staff were detained, operations halted, and sensitive customer data demanded. The campaign also saw a dozen of company employees killed in suspicious manner.

Business owners and market traders in Mogadishu were extorted under the pretext of “security fees,” and aid convoys were stopped unless portions were surrendered to NISA personnel.

The reappointment of Mahad Salad—despite these chilling events—is a brazen insult to Somalia’s citizens, journalists, business leaders, and minority communities.

No independent investigation has ever been launched into his crimes. No justice has been served for the abducted, tortured, or killed. Instead of accountability, Salad has been rewarded—again.

As Somalia stands at a crossroads, the international community must not stay silent. Donor nations, especially those funding Somali security and governance programs, must demand investigations, impose consequences, and condition support on real reforms.

Somalia’s people deserve safety, justice, and leaders who protect—not persecute—them.
