Somalia’s international partners have reportedly intensified pressure on the Federal Government to reach an agreement before end of August 2026, amid growing concern that the country’s political deadlock could undermine state-building, security, and international support.

Diplomatic sources told Kaab TV that the message was first conveyed to a senior official within the Somali Presidency before being passed to President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.

According to the sources, several partners believe the prolonged political impasse is increasingly affecting governance, constitutional reforms, electoral preparations, and cooperation between the Federal Government and federal member states.

The reported warning comes as Somalia faces deepening disputes over constitutional amendments, the electoral model, and the relationship between Mogadishu and regional administrations.

The political divisions have stalled efforts to reach a national consensus on elections and institutional reforms at a time when the country is also confronting serious security and financial challenges.

Sources further indicated that development assistance, project funding, and political cooperation could be reviewed if Somali leaders fail to reach an inclusive political settlement in the coming weeks.

Diplomats also reportedly suggested that the level of diplomatic engagement with Somalia could be reassessed should the current political stalemate continue.

However, no official decision has been announced to suspend aid or reduce cooperation.

The reported diplomatic pressure also comes as the future of the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) remains uncertain following a funding crisis.

International partners have repeatedly stressed that political stability is essential to sustaining security gains against Al-Shabaab and ensuring continued international investment in Somalia’s institutions.

Meanwhile, the Somali opposition, led by the Somalia Future Council, has renewed calls for a comprehensive political settlement.

In an open letter dated July 27, 2026, the council proposed the establishment of an inclusive transitional national council to oversee constitutional and electoral reforms until new national institutions are peacefully established.

The letter was addressed to heads of state, defense ministers, and military chiefs of countries contributing troops and police to AUSSOM.

The opposition argues that restoring political legitimacy, rebuilding national consensus, and safeguarding the neutrality of state institutions—particularly the Somali National Army—are essential for preventing further instability.

Although the Federal Government and opposition groups recently resumed Turkish-mediated dialogue, sources familiar with the negotiations say discussions have yet to make meaningful progress on the most contentious issues, including the disputed constitutional amendments and the framework for future elections.

Somalia’s international partners have consistently urged all political stakeholders to resolve their differences through dialogue, warning that a broad-based political agreement remains critical for preserving stability, maintaining international confidence, and securing continued diplomatic and financial support.

The embassy joined several international partners and organizations that have recently urged Somalia’s political stakeholders to return to negotiations over key national issues, including the country’s electoral process and other disputed political matters.

In its statement, the United States warned against any actions that could trigger violence or instability between the federal government and opposition leaders, stressing that dialogue remains the best path toward resolving political disagreements.

“The United States urges Somalia’s political stakeholders to exercise restraint and avoid any actions that could fuel violence or instability, and we call for dialogue,” the statement from the U.S. Embassy in Mogadishu said.

The renewed international pressure comes as Somalia faces increasing political uncertainty linked to disagreements over elections, constitutional reforms, power-sharing arrangements, and the broader democratic transition process.

Relations between the federal government and opposition groups have become increasingly strained in recent months, with opposition figures accusing the government of failing to build consensus on the electoral framework and other national priorities.

The United States is among several international actors calling for political compromise and inclusive dialogue to prevent further instability in Somalia at a sensitive time for the country’s political future.

The latest appeal follows similar calls from the United Nations, the European Union, and the United Kingdom Government, all of which have urged Somali leaders to resume negotiations and prioritize national stability.
