Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan made football history on Wednesday after taking charge of the 2026 UEFA Super Cup between Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa at the Red Bull Arena in Salzburg, Austria.

Artan became the first referee from outside Europe to officiate the UEFA Super Cup, marking another major milestone in his rapidly developing international career.

The appointment placed a Somali official at the center of one of European football’s most prestigious annual fixtures.

The match brought together Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain and Europa League winners Aston Villa, with PSG eventually retaining the trophy after a 2–1 victory.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Désiré Doué scored for the French side, while Aston Villa’s Brian Madjo briefly brought his team level.

A Landmark Achievement for Somalia

Artan’s appointment is particularly significant because UEFA’s Super Cup is traditionally officiated by referees from European football’s governing system.

His selection therefore represented a rare opportunity for an African referee to take charge of a major UEFA final.

UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin had previously praised Artan as an “excellent young but already experienced referee”, highlighting his performances at the highest level of African football.

UEFA said his appointment followed discussions with the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

CAF President Patrice Motsepe also praised the Somali official, saying Artan had “made Somalia and the entire people of the African continent extremely proud.” Motsepe pointed to Artan’s 2025 CAF Men’s Referee of the Year award and his selection for the 2026 FIFA World Cup as evidence of his growing international reputation.

From Somalia to Europe’s Biggest Stage

Artan, who has been a FIFA-listed referee since 2018, has steadily built a reputation through major African competitions.

He became the first Somali referee to officiate at the Africa Cup of Nations in 2024 and has also handled important CAF Champions League matches.

His UEFA Super Cup appointment came only months after another major milestone: he had been selected to officiate at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.

However, he was unable to take part after being denied entry to the United States.

That setback generated widespread attention, particularly because Artan had already been selected among FIFA’s tournament officials. He later described the period as difficult, but his subsequent appointment by UEFA gave him another opportunity to officiate on an international stage.

The UEFA assignment therefore became more than just another match in Artan’s career. It represented a remarkable turnaround following the disappointment surrounding his World Cup participation.

PSG Lift the Trophy

Artan’s historic appointment was followed by an entertaining final in Salzburg, where PSG defeated Aston Villa 2–1 to retain the UEFA Super Cup.

PSG took the lead through Kvaratskhelia before Villa responded before halftime. Doué restored PSG’s advantage in the second half, and the French champions held on despite Villa’s efforts to find another equalizer.

The victory also saw PSG join AC Milan and Real Madrid as the only clubs to have successfully retained the UEFA Super Cup, while manager Luis Enrique collected another major trophy during his tenure at the club.

For Artan, however, the significance of the night extended far beyond the result.

His presence in Salzburg placed Somalia and African refereeing on one of Europe’s biggest football stages, demonstrating the increasing international recognition of African match officials.

Artan has repeatedly represented Somalia in competitions outside the country, and his progression from officiating domestic matches to major CAF competitions, the World Cup selection and ultimately the UEFA Super Cup reflects a rapid rise in his refereeing career.

His historic appearance also reinforces the wider role football can play in connecting different regions of the world. UEFA itself described the appointment as part of its commitment, together with CAF, to promoting unity, equality and non-discrimination in football.

For Somali football, Artan’s achievement provides a rare moment of international recognition and establishes a new benchmark for referees from the country seeking to reach the highest levels of the sport.
