Mogadishu (Kaab TV) – The Somali Future Council has issued a strong public statement urging Somali leaders and political stakeholders to uphold the country’s constitution and democratic principles as the presidential term comes to its end.

In a press release dated May 15, 2026, the council expressed concern over the political tensions and uncertainty surrounding Somalia’s governance ahead of the expiry of the current presidential mandate.

The statement follows a series of political meetings held in Mogadishu between May 13 and May 15 involving federal government officials, political leaders, and members of the Somali Future Council.

According to the council, the meetings focused on finding solutions to the political challenges facing the country and ensuring a peaceful constitutional transition of power. The group emphasized the importance of safeguarding national stability, maintaining constitutional order, and protecting the country from political division and insecurity.

The council reasserted that the constitutional term of the current president officially ends on May 15, 2026, in accordance with Article 91 of Somalia’s provisional constitution. It therefore called on President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to respect the constitutional timeline and avoid actions that could deepen political disputes or undermine democratic institutions.

The statement also warned against extending executive authority beyond constitutional limits, describing such actions as a threat to political stability, national unity, and public confidence in governance. The council stressed that Somalia’s fragile political environment requires dialogue, compromise, and lawful governance.

“The Council, supported by the Somali people, will take responsible steps to save the unity and existence of the country’s governance”, the Council further warned.

Furthermore, the Somali Future Council appealed to Somali citizens, political actors, and international partners to support peaceful constitutional processes and encourage inclusive political dialogue.

Abdirahman Abdishakur, a leading opposition figure aligned with the Somali Future Council, said: “The call for dialogue is not made in good faith.”

“It does not seek reconciliation or consensus, but rather to manufacture political acceptance and provide cover for unilateral decisions and a possible extension of the term”, he added.

The council also reaffirmed its commitment to protecting Somalia’s constitutional framework and promoting long-term political stability, democracy, and national reconciliation.

The council appealed directly to Somalia’s security forces to fulfill their constitutional responsibilities by protecting the Somali people and preserving national stability. The organization stressed that the armed forces must remain neutral and avoid involvement in political disputes.

The council specifically urged President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to refrain from actions that could provoke political unrest or constitutional violations, warning that any attempt to extend authority beyond legal limits could further destabilize the country.

At the same time, the Somali Future Council praised the Somali National Army and security agencies for their ongoing efforts in combating extremist groups and maintaining security across the nation. The group emphasized that continued cooperation in the fight against terrorism remains essential for Somalia’s long-term peace and development.

The council said peaceful discussions and agreement are essential to avoid deeper divisions in the country

In its concluding remarks, the Somali Future Council expressed appreciation to international partners for their continued support to Somalia. They encouraged the global community to remain engaged in helping Somalia achieve political stability, constitutional governance, and sustainable peace.

The statement ended with a renewed commitment from the council to support democratic principles, national reconciliation, and the rule of law as Somalia navigates a sensitive political transition.

MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – Somalia’s federal parliament has plunged into a deep political crisis after a motion to impeach Lower House Speaker Aden Mohamed Nur “Madobe” sparked chaos and physical confrontations during Wednesday’s session.

Lawmakers clashed inside the chambers after Speaker Madobe and his deputies allegedly refused to table the impeachment motion for debate.

As the session was due to start, a heated session descended into violence, leaving several opposition MPs bruised and journalists physically assaulted and later removed.

It was the second time in two weeks that a parliamentary session ended in disorder, leading to yet another abrupt adjournment.

Controversial order banning 20 opposition

In response to the unrest, Speaker Madobe issued a controversial order banning 20 opposition MPs and three pro-government lawmakers from attending future sessions, accusing them of inciting the chaos.

“I instruct the parliamentary secretary-general to begin enforcing this order against those who caused disruption in the House,” he declared.

BREAKING: Speaker of Parliament,’s Lower House Sheikh Aden Madobe has just announced that he stopped pursuing his illegal expulsion of MP @MPDrAbib from the Somalia Federal Parliament.

“I have decided to return the issue to the Parliament’s ethics committee to decide on the next… pic.twitter.com/dkFaZM0PR7

— Kaab TV (@KaabTV) April 29, 2025

The turmoil traces back to Madobe’s earlier decision to expel outspoken opposition MP Abdullahi Hashi Abib, a diaspora-based lawmaker critical of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.

Abib has frequently raised concerns about government corruption, particularly related to contracts and donor funds.

However, on Tuesday, the Speaker rescinded the expulsion, referring the matter to the parliamentary ethics subcommittee.

Despite this reversal, opposition MPs pushed forward with their impeachment efforts.

MP Abdirashid Hiddig said they intended to present the motion on Wednesday and expected Madobe to step aside from chairing the session in accordance with parliamentary procedures.

“Once the Speaker is under impeachment, he must step down from his role during the session, and one of his deputies should preside over the meeting,” Hiddig stated.

Neither of the Speaker’s deputies attended, and Madobe attempted to continue chairing the session himself.

As tempers flared, Madobe reportedly hurled insults at vocal MPs, including using derogatory language against a lawmaker living with a physical disability.

The remarks provoked outrage within the parliament and across Somali civil society.

“This Speaker has violated the dignity of MPs with disabilities. This is a human rights violation,” said MP Hiddig. “The world needs to know he cannot lead the Somali parliament with such conduct.”

The National Coalition for Disability Rights condemned Madobe’s comments, urging him to issue a public apology and uphold respectful discourse in the House.

“Disability should never be used to silence, discredit, or diminish anyone’s participation,” the coalition said in a statement. “Such language undermines dignity, equality, and inclusive democratic values.”

Several political figures, including former President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire, and MP Abdirahman Abdishakur, have also denounced the Speaker’s behavior and called for calm and accountability.

The ongoing crisis threatens to derail critical legislative functions and deepen political instability in Somalia, as lawmakers remain divided and public confidence in the parliament wanes.
