Speaking to the media at the destruction site, the Police Spokesperson said the medications, valued at approximately $20,000, had been confiscated during an earlier operation at Mogadishu Port before being presented before a competent court, which authorized their destruction in accordance with the law.

The spokesperson said the operation was part of ongoing efforts to combat drug abuse and prevent dangerous pharmaceutical substances from reaching communities, warning that the misuse of such medications poses a serious threat to public health and security.

“The destruction of these drugs is intended to protect Somali society from the devastating consequences of substance abuse. Individuals who misuse these medications often become involved in violent behavior and other criminal activities that endanger public safety,” the spokesperson said.

Among the drugs destroyed were Pregabalin tablets, commonly known locally as “Bilibil,” and Tramadol, a powerful prescription painkiller used to treat moderate to severe pain. Authorities said that while both medications have legitimate medical uses when prescribed by healthcare professionals, they are increasingly being abused as intoxicants, particularly by young people seeking psychoactive effects.

Somali authorities have intensified efforts in recent years to crack down on the illegal trafficking, distribution, and misuse of prescription drugs, citing growing concerns over addiction, organized smuggling networks, and the social harm associated with pharmaceutical drug abuse. Officials have pledged to continue strengthening inspections at ports of entry and pursuing legal action against individuals involved in the illicit drug trade.

Mogadishu (Kaab TV) – The Somali Police Force has arrested 11 suspects, all of whom are soldiers, after they were found unlawfully carrying weapons in the center of Mogadishu.

The arrests followed security operations conducted by police in several districts of the capital as part of ongoing efforts to curb the illegal carrying of firearms within the city.

In a statement released by the Command of the Banadir Regional Police, authorities said the detained soldiers had violated directives issued by security agencies, which clearly prohibit any off-duty soldier from carrying weapons openly or independently within the capital.

The Somali Police said the operation is part of broader efforts to strengthen public security and prevent any actions that could endanger the safety of civilians living in Mogadishu.

“The 11 suspects who were arrested are currently in police custody and will be referred to the appropriate court to face justice and to ensure that the law is properly enforced,” the statement from the Banadir Regional Police Command said.

The operation comes as the Somali Police have previously issued strict security orders banning off-duty soldiers from carrying weapons in Mogadishu.

It also coincides with heightened security measures ahead of the local council elections, which are scheduled to take place in Mogadishu on Thursday, the 25th of this month.

Mogadishu (Kaab TV) – Somali security agencies have announced that nearly 10,000 police officers are fully prepared to provide security for the local council elections scheduled to take place in Mogadishu on December 25.

Speaking to the media on Sunday, the Minister of Internal Security, Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail (Farataag), said the Somali Police Force has finalized a comprehensive security plan to ensure the elections are conducted peacefully, safely, and transparently.

“The Somali Police Force is ready and capable of securing the elections. All necessary preparations have been completed,” Minister Farataag said, emphasizing that the protection of civilians, polling stations, and election personnel remains the top priority for security agencies.

He added that police officers will be deployed across the capital to safeguard voters, polling centers, election officials, and key infrastructure throughout the voting period.

The upcoming local council elections are widely regarded as a historic milestone, marking the first direct one-person, one-vote (OPV) elections in Mogadishu in more than five decades.

In anticipation of potential security threats—particularly from armed groups seeking to disrupt the process—security agencies have intensified patrols, enhanced intelligence coordination, and reinforced checkpoints throughout the city.

Meanwhile, the National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC) announced that nearly 5,000 election workers will be deployed to polling stations across the Banadir region on December 25 to facilitate the smooth conduct of the vote.

NIEC Chairman Abdikarim Ahmed Hassan said the election staff, most of whom are young Somalis, have undergone extensive training in election administration, voter rights, polling procedures, and professional responsibilities to ensure a transparent and credible process in accordance with national laws.

“The Banadir election is of particular importance and represents a significant step in Somalia’s democratic journey,” Abdikarim said, noting that well-trained election workers are essential to building public trust in the electoral process.
