The operation reportedly targeted several locations and hideouts used by Al-Shabaab in areas between Buurhakaba and Baidoa, where the group had been known to harass and harm civilians.

Led by the Commander of the 8th Battalion of the 60th Division, Lieutenant Colonel Cali Mohamed Aadan, the forces also removed roadside bombs planted by Al-Shabaab along key routes, which posed a serious threat to civilians.

“The operation, which aimed at clearing out the Khawarij, allowed the forces to prevent ambushes the group had prepared for civilians and to remove landmines that would have endangered the lives of the people and the movement of vehicles,” the Federal Government said in a statement.

The commander of the 8th Battalion of the 60th Division stated that the operation concluded successfully and that efforts to ensure security throughout the Bay region will continue.

General Ahmed Haji Abdullahi, the Deputy Public Prosecutor of the Armed Forces Court—commonly known as Kamey—stated that certain officials have been shielded from legal consequences despite substantial evidence of their involvement in violent clan clashes.

“Officials from both sides participated in the fighting in Wanlaweyn District. They supplied the militias with weapons, ammunition, and money, and also defended them verbally and supported them on social media,” the deputy prosecutor said.

“We have now gathered extensive evidence proving that some authorities benefiting from immunity are directly aligned with the militias that fought in Wanlaweyn District,” he added.

He further noted that the Committee of the Federal Parliament, along with the Parliamentary Ethics Committee, will request the removal of immunity from the implicated MPs once the evidence is formally presented.
