MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – Former Somali President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed is expected to vacate the residence where he had been staying in the Mirinaayo neighborhood of Abdiaziz district, following days of mediation and political discussions between the Federal Government and opposition figures.

Sources close to Sheikh Sharif told Kaab TV that the former president voluntarily decided to return to his previous residence in Mogadishu after efforts aimed at easing tensions in the area.

Earlier today, the Commander of the Somali National Army, along with several traditional elders, visited the location where Sheikh Sharif has been residing as part of the ongoing reconciliation efforts. Well-informed sources said the decision to relocate was not the result of pressure or force imposed on the former president, but rather a personal decision reached after several days of negotiations and dialogue.

The Federal Government of Somalia had previously advised opposition members to return to their respective neighborhoods as part of wider efforts to reduce political tensions in Mogadishu and restore stability in the capital.

Sheikh Sharif had earlier stated that Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud could not determine where he lives or restrict his political activities. However, the latest reports indicate that he is now preparing to leave the Mirinaayo residence where he had recently been staying.

Reports also suggest that forces stationed in the area are expected to be withdrawn in the coming hours as part of de-escalation measures. So far, there is no official confirmation regarding any planned disarmament of forces or supporters associated with Sheikh Sharif.

Local sources further indicated that no punitive measures are expected to be taken against individuals who supported or hosted the former president during his stay in the Mirinaayo neighborhood.

Sharif, who chairs the opposition Somali Future Council, said during an X Spaces discussion that troops had been deployed in parts of the capital and that the movement of politicians and lawmakers had been restricted ahead of Sunday’s protests.

He accused President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s government of attempting to prevent opposition leaders from participating in demonstrations organized over forced evictions, demolitions, and land disputes in Mogadishu.

“We are not waging war, and we are not carrying weapons. We are only accompanied by our guards,” Sharif said, stressing that the opposition had no intention of staging an armed uprising.

He added that the opposition was committed to a peaceful demonstration and did not seek confrontation with security forces. However, he warned that the security measures in Mogadishu reflected what he described as “a system that is collapsing.”

Sharif said overnight operations had tightened security across the city, with roads closed, troops deployed, and access to opposition figures restricted.

“We want peace, not war. We want the Somali people to have the opportunity to express their views,” he said.

He urged all parties to avoid actions that could lead to bloodshed, warning that any attempt to block peaceful protests would further deepen political tensions in the capital.

The Somali Future Council said Sunday’s demonstrations were planned across several districts in the Banadir region. Opposition leaders accuse the federal government of displacing residents from homes and businesses without proper legal procedures, compensation, or justification.

However, federal and Banadir regional authorities have rejected the plan, stating that any protest will only be permitted at Engineer Yarisow Stadium. Officials said demonstrations elsewhere in Mogadishu would not be allowed due to security concerns.

The standoff has increased anxiety in the capital, with residents fearing possible clashes between government security forces and opposition supporters.

Sunday’s protest is also expected to coincide with a planned meeting between President Mohamud and opposition leaders on key national issues, including constitutional reforms and the electoral process—both of which remain major points of contention between the government and its critics.

This follows the government’s directive issued yesterday, instructing the opposition to hold demonstrations at those designated venues.

This decision effectively enforces the Somali government’s order prohibiting the opposition from holding protests in the locations they had previously selected, some of which were close to the presidential palace.

Meanwhile, the government has tightened security in Mogadishu, deploying additional forces to areas where opposition members are based.

Several roads in Mogadishu have been closed, and the sound of military aircraft has been reported, suggesting that the government is on high alert.

These activities by both the government and the opposition in Mogadishu have affected daily life in the capital, particularly for low-income residents.

Mogadishu (Kaab TV) — Somali opposition leaders who met today in Mogadishu reaffirmed that the planned protest scheduled for tomorrow will go ahead. The demonstration is intended to oppose what they described as the displacement of residents and destruction taking place in the capital. They accused the Federal Government of forcibly removing civilians from the areas where they had been living.

Member of Parliament Abdirahman Warsame, one of the politicians leading the anti-government demonstrations, stated that the protest would be peaceful and aimed at defending displaced residents.

“This protest is a peaceful demonstration. It is a protest against the displacement of people and the illegal seizure of land belonging to Somali citizens,” said MP Abdirahman Abdishakur.

He claimed that hundreds of thousands of people had been forced from their homes and business premises.

He also called on the public, especially those who had been displaced from their neighbourhoods, to participate in the demonstrations, saying that “everyone should return to the place they were displaced from in order to assert their rights.”

Former Somali Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire stated that the protests would continue until the affected people receive their rights.

“This is not just a one-day protest. It will continue until the victims obtain their rights,” Khaire said.

Khaire accused the government of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of suppressing and arresting young people and individuals who hold views different from those of the government. He also urged the security forces not to be used against peaceful protesters.

Former Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble likewise said that the people of Mogadishu must “stand up in defense of those who have been displaced.”

“Tomorrow is a day for every compassionate citizen to come out and protest,” Roble said, describing Mogadishu as “a city known for peace and hospitality,” but adding that there are now “a small number of people attempting to seize public property unlawfully.”

Meanwhile, former Somali President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, who also chairs the Somali Future Opposition Council, stated that this year had become “a year marked by land grabbing and forced displacement.”

Sharif Sheikh Ahmed accused the government of failing to stop the demolition of homes and the forced relocation of poor residents, saying that the issue could not remain ignored.

“We oppose the injustice being inflicted on people who have been displaced from their homes,” he said, while urging the public to participate in the planned demonstrations.

Opposition leaders stated that the protests would take place in several districts across the Banadir region, emphasizing that they would be “peaceful demonstrations” intended to express public grievances.

Mogadishu (Kaab TV) — Former Somali President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed has emerged as a leading critic of the federal government’s plan to hold direct, one‑person‑one‑vote elections — a major shift away from the long‑standing clan‑based system — warning that the country is not ready and that the process threatens political stability and security.

Sharif, now a prominent opposition leader, rejects the government’s direct election initiative on multiple grounds, arguing that it lacks broad legal and political consensus, sufficient security safeguards, and a credible institutional foundation. His concerns reflect deepening divisions among Somali political elites as preparations accelerate for what would be the nation’s first direct elections in more than five decades.

At the heart of Sharif’s opposition is the belief that the electoral process has been driven unilaterally by the federal government without genuine agreement from key stakeholders, including federal member states and opposition parties.

He has repeatedly stressed that “a credible election cannot proceed without a broad‑based consensus”, a view shared by allied political actors who argue that the government’s approach risks sidelining regional voices and key actors in the electoral architecture.

Sharif has also criticized the appointment of the national electoral commission, calling it partisan and illegitimate because it was established without cross‑party approval — undermining public confidence in the body responsible for overseeing the vote.

Another central pillar of Sharif’s objection lies in legal and constitutional matters. He contends that key electoral laws and constitutional amendments underpinning the direct election model were passed without full parliamentary participation and that essential legal groundwork remains incomplete.

According to Sharif, the lack of a legally sound and consensually agreed framework could weaken the legitimacy of the election and fuel further political instability.

Opposition leaders have warned that actions taken outside agreed constitutional processes — including changes to election laws — may violate Somalia’s fragile legal foundations.

Security remains a deeply contested issue in Somalia, where Al‑Shabaab attacks and fragile public safety continue to undermine state authority in many regions. Sharif has stressed that Somalia is not yet secure enough to hold nationwide direct elections, particularly in areas beset by insurgent activity and weak government control.

He argues that without stable security conditions, the electoral process could be easily manipulated or disrupted by militant groups or local spoilers.

Related reports from opposition sources allege the use of security forces to influence voter registration and exert pressure on citizens in Mogadishu — claims the federal government denies — further fueling Sharif’s security concerns.

Sharif and his allies insist they support the concept of universal suffrage in principle, but not the current rushed or fragmented implementation that they say bypasses inclusive dialogue and consensus‑building.
