Mogadishu (Kaab TV) – According to recent reports from humanitarian agencies and food security monitors, more than 6 million Somalis are experiencing acute food insecurity, while nearly 2 million children under the age of five are suffering from acute malnutrition.

The crisis has been fueled by consecutive failed rainy seasons that have devastated crops, dried up water sources, and killed livestock across large parts of the country.

Southern and central Somalia have been particularly hard hit, with experts warning that some districts may soon reach famine conditions if rains fail again and humanitarian assistance does not increase.

In Burhakaba District in Somalia’s Bay Region, hunger levels have skyrocketed. Food security analysts say more than 37 percent of children there are acutely malnourished—one of the clearest warning signs of a looming famine.

Aid organizations say the situation is being worsened by major cuts in global humanitarian funding. Somalia received billions of dollars in aid during previous drought emergencies, but current funding levels are far lower despite growing needs. The United Nations says its humanitarian response plan remains critically underfunded

The World Food Programme has warned that lifesaving food assistance programs may be suspended in some areas if urgent financial support is not secured.

Humanitarian workers report that clinics are already struggling to treat severely malnourished children because supplies of therapeutic food are running low.

The drought has also triggered widespread displacement. Hundreds of thousands of families have left their homes in search of water, food, and medical care. Many are now living in overcrowded camps with limited sanitation and healthcare services.

Rising food and fuel prices have made basic necessities unaffordable for many households, especially in urban areas thus adding to the crisis.

In Mogadishu, the collapse in confidence in the Somali shilling has further increased hardship for poor families who depend on cash-based trade.

Somalia has faced repeated climate shocks over the past decade, including one of the worst droughts in its history between 2021 and 2023. Humanitarian agencies warn that climate change is making droughts more frequent and severe across the Horn of Africa.

Aid groups and international organizations are calling for urgent action to prevent a repeat of the devastating 2011 famine, which killed an estimated 250,000 people in Somalia.

Humanitarian groups urge immediate humanitarian assistance, improved access to water, and long-term investment in climate resilience will be essential to preventing further loss of life.

Affected areas include the Xasbahalle community, where the main wells that were traditionally used for drinking water have run dry, according to the local chairman, Siciid Saleebaan Mire.

The chairman noted that both residents within the town and those in surrounding rural areas are now facing extreme water scarcity and lack the means to travel long distances in search of water. He added that they have had to source water from communities in Garowe District.

Officials in Eyl say they have repeatedly raised alarms with the regional administration and humanitarian organizations, but they emphasized that no aid has yet reached the affected areas within the district.

Although water shortages are widespread across Puntland, the situation in Xasbahalle is particularly severe and differs from other affected regions.

MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières, MSF) has warned that Somalia is facing a severe health and nutrition emergency driven by repeated droughts, soaring water prices, and a sharp decline in humanitarian assistance.

MSF said the combined impact of prolonged drought and dwindling donor funding has disproportionately affected internally displaced people and vulnerable communities in the Bay, Bakool, and Mudug regions, where the organization operates. MSF teams are reporting alarming increases in malnutrition and the spread of preventable diseases such as measles, diphtheria, and acute watery diarrhea.

In November 2025, the Federal Government of Somalia declared a national drought emergency after the country experienced four consecutive failed rainy seasons. United Nations reports indicate that by the end of 2025, around 4.4 million people could face severe food insecurity, including 1.85 million children under the age of five who are at risk of acute malnutrition.

MSF also noted that more than 3.3 million people have already been displaced from their homes, most of them living in overcrowded camps in Baydhabo and Mudug. The decline in humanitarian funding—now at its lowest level in a decade—has led to the closure of more than 200 health and nutrition facilities since the beginning of 2025.

In Baydhabo, MSF reported a 48 percent increase in cases of severe acute malnutrition among children in October 2025 compared to the previous month. During the same period, 189 children were treated for suspected measles, 95 percent of whom had never been vaccinated. In Mudug region, therapeutic feeding centers recorded a 35 percent rise in admissions.

“We are seeing children arriving at our hospitals in extremely critical condition after days-long journeys, without access to food or water,” said Allara Ali, MSF’s Project Coordinator in Somalia. “The drought has not only dried up water sources, but has also destroyed the livelihoods that families depended on.”

The drought has also severely limited access to clean water. MSF reported that the price of a 200-liter barrel of water has risen to between $2.50 and $4.00 in Baydhabo and Mudug—far beyond what many displaced families can afford.

“We cannot afford to buy water. Both food and water are scarce for us,” said Kaltuma Kerow, a 35-year-old mother living in an internally displaced persons camp in Baydhabo. “We are afraid of diseases like cholera.”

In response to the crisis, MSF launched an emergency water trucking operation in Baydhabo in December 2025, delivering more than six million liters of clean water to 17 displacement sites by mid-January. However, the organization stressed that current needs far exceed its existing capacity.

“This crisis was predictable and largely preventable,” said Elshafie Mohamed, MSF’s Head of Mission in Somalia. “The current humanitarian response is at its lowest level in the past ten years.”

MSF has urged international donors and Somali authorities to urgently release funding to scale up nutrition, vaccination, and water programs, and to invest in long-term, climate-resilient solutions to prevent widespread loss of life in the coming months.

MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – Areas under the South West State and Jubbaland administrations are experiencing a severe drought that has had a negative impact on pastoralists and farmers. Some families have begun migrating to other areas in search of survival.

Various sources told the media that the situation has worsened in recent days after the limited water previously available in some areas disappeared from wells, forcing residents to abandon their homes.

Livestock in several areas are beginning to die in large numbers due to a combination of thirst and lack of pasture. Cattle have been reported as the most affected among the different types of livestock.

Large tracts of farmland that depend on the Jubba and Shabelle rivers have dried up. Warnings have been issued that the situation could deteriorate further if no rainfall occurs or if the rivers do not receive new water.

Hundreds of families were displaced from their homes across southern and northern Somalia in December 2025. These people fled drought-stricken and water-scarce areas in an effort to save their lives.
