JOWHAR (Kaab TV) – Security forces in Hirshabelle have foiled two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) planted in Jowhar, preventing what authorities say could have been attacks during a high-profile visit by former Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Thursday.

According to local officials, the explosives were discovered during security operations conducted in the Horseed and Buulo Sheekh neighborhoods of Jowhar, the administrative capital of Hirshabelle State.

The first device was reportedly planted near the Horseed neighborhood administrative office, while the second was buried along a road in Buulo Sheekh. Both explosives were safely removed and neutralized by security personnel.

Security officials praised local residents for providing information that led to the discovery of the devices, saying community cooperation played a key role in preventing the planned attacks.

Authorities said the security situation in Jowhar is currently stable, although investigations remain ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible for planting the explosives.

The attempted attacks coincided with a sensitive period for the city, which has been hosting federal and regional delegations attending the inauguration of several development projects in Hirshabelle’s capital.

The incident follows a series of recent attacks in Jowhar involving grenades and explosive devices targeting military installations and residences of senior officers in the Somali National Army.

The militant group Al-Shabaab has frequently carried out hit-and-run attacks, bombings, and targeted assassinations in Jowhar and surrounding areas of the Middle Shabelle region, where government forces continue military operations aimed at weakening the group’s presence.

Security forces have since intensified patrols and search operations across the city as part of efforts to maintain stability and prevent further attacks.
