Mogadishu (Kaab TV) — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Saturday officially inaugurated the newly reconstructed road connecting the Dabka and Bakaara intersections in Mogadishu, a major infrastructure project carried out by the Benadir Regional Administration.

The president described the road as a symbol of Mogadishu’s recovery and the tangible progress made in security, governance, and economic development.

“The reconstruction of this road reflects the revival and visible progress of the capital, particularly in the areas of security, democracy, and economic infrastructure,” President Mohamud said during the inauguration ceremony.

He also commended the Benadir Regional Administration for its efforts, calling the project a historic step toward channeling tax revenues into public service delivery and improving urban infrastructure.

During his address, the president reiterated his administration’s commitment to implementing universal suffrage in Somalia, emphasizing the importance of transitioning to a one-person, one-vote electoral system.

“Our goal is to regulate politics and return power to the people. It is not possible for an individual or a small group to decide the fate of millions of Somalis,” he said. “An election means one person, one vote—so be prepared.”

The proposed electoral reform remains a contentious issue, with Puntland, Jubbaland, and Southwest states, along with major opposition groups, rejecting the federal government’s plans. Critics cite security challenges, a lack of political consensus, and the incomplete readiness of political parties.

Despite a series of negotiations between government and opposition leaders, no comprehensive agreement has been reached. The impasse comes as President Mohamud’s official term approaches its expiry in less than a month.

The president also urged Somali business leaders to invest in productive sectors such as agriculture and industry to strengthen the country’s economic resilience and reduce dependence on imports. He emphasized that domestic investment is essential for sustainable development, job creation, and food security.
