HARGEISA (Kaab TV) – Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has released a photo showing the President of Somaliland, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi, standing alongside Israel’s Foreign Minister, Gideon Sa’ar.

Foreign Minister Sa’ar, who also shared the image himself, said that the celebratory images coming from Somaliland reflect happiness and hope for a positive future.

“We will continue to work together to strengthen cooperation and friendship between our two nations and peoples,” Minister Sa’ar said.

It is not known exactly when President Cirro traveled to Israel, but reports suggest that he most likely transited through the United Arab Emirates. He has reportedly traveled to the UAE on two occasions during which he was absent from the media for several days and his whereabouts were unknown.

It is believed that President Cirro took this approach to conceal his diplomatic activities from the Federal Government of Somalia, as there was a possibility that Somalia could intervene and attempt to undermine his efforts.

Israel, which was among the first countries to recognize Somaliland in 1960, is once again taking bold steps to be the first country to formally recognize Somaliland today. Israel is also said to be working to encourage the United States government to follow suit, although former President Donald Trump has stated that he would not rush such a decision.

The United Nations Security Council is expected to hold a meeting tomorrow to discuss the recognition of Somaliland. It is likely that a debate will take place there between Israel and countries opposed to recognition, led by Somalia.

HARGEISA (Kaab TV) – The President of Somaliland has formally nominated U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, citing his recent acknowledgment of the region’s bid for international recognition.

In a speech delivered on Thursday, President Abdirahman Abdillahi Irro, expressed gratitude for Senator Ted Cruz’s support and Representative Scott Perry’s introduction of the Somaliland Recognition Act, both of which have bolstered Somaliland’s aspirations for sovereignty.

“I would like to thank the President of the United States for considering the recognition of the Republic of Somaliland. Today, I hereby declare that, as the President of Somaliland, I join global leaders in nominating President Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize,” the Somaliland leader said.

Somaliland declared its independence from Somalia in 1991 following the collapse of the Somali Democratic Republic.

Since then, it has maintained a separate government, currency, and democratic institutions, operating as a de facto state.

Despite its stability and self-governance, Somaliland’s sovereignty remains unrecognized by the international community.

Recent Developments in U.S. Policy

Last week, U.S President Trump indicated that his administration is “looking into” Somaliland’s case for recognition.

This was after a reporter asked him whether his administration is considering the recognition of Somaliland.

Trump’s statement marks a significant shift from the longstanding U.S. policy of supporting a unified Somalia.

Analysts suggest that the U.S. may be reevaluating its stance to counterbalance China’s growing influence in the Horn of Africa, particularly in Djibouti, where the U.S. maintains a strategic military base.

Somaliland’s port of Berbera has also attracted international attention due to its strategic location.

In the United Kingdom, over 20 Members of Parliament have voiced support for Somaliland’s recognition.

Former MP Gavin Williamson has been a prominent advocate, highlighting Somaliland’s democratic elections and stability.

Additionally, the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Somaliland has published a report urging the UK government to lead efforts in recognizing Somaliland, emphasizing the historical ties between the UK and the region.

Somaliland’s strategic location along key maritime routes and its relative stability in a region marked by conflict have made it an attractive partner for international powers.

The region’s commitment to democratic governance and development further bolsters its case for recognition.

However, the Somali government in Mogadishu has opposed the recognition of Somaliland saying it ‘amounts partitioning’ of Somalia.

GAROWE (Kaab TV) – Puntland and Somaliland are expected to exchange prisoners on Wednesday as a sign to normalise their relations.

Sources close to the Puntland presidency have confirmed that nine prisoners currently held in Puntland prisons, who were captured from Somaliland, will be transferred from Garowe tomorrow.

In return, Somaliland is set to release 11 prisoners originally from Puntland.

This marks the first such agreement aimed at normalizing relations between the two neighboring regions, which have long been at odds.

Puntland and Somaliland have been in dispute over the Sool and Sanaag regions. However, in 2023, following a major conflict in Las Anod, a new administration called SSC-Khaatumo was established.

Somaliland considers itself an independent state, while Puntland is a federal member state of Somalia.

Sources in Hargeisa indicate that this prisoner release reflects a new thaw in relations between Hargeisa and Garowe.

During the Las Anod conflict, Puntland supported the local population with troops, weapons, and finances, which contributed to Somaliland’s defeat in the August 2023 battle.

However, relations between Puntland and SSC-Khaatumo have recently soured, particularly after SSC-Khaatumo aligned itself with the Federal Government of Somalia — a government that Puntland currently has strained ties and deep disagreements with.
